Meet Esther Freedman of cuteheads

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Freedman.

Esther, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started cuteheads almost 8 years ago now when I realized our dog Winnie’s nickname — cutehead — was a cute name for a kid’s clothing brand. I’d always wanted to start my own business, and I loved the idea of creating a brand that people could fall in love with. Over the years, cuteheads has grown and morphed into something completely different from what it was when we started, but it’s been incredible to see it evolve over the years. We largely specialize in people’s special occasions, making clothing for girls ages newborn to 8 years old. Whatever the special occasion, whether it’s a birthday, first day of school, and wedding, we create pieces that are cute, girly and one of a kind that makes girls feel confident and beautiful.

Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t imagine any entrepreneur says their journey has been a smooth road! I’ve experienced all the ups and downs of running a small business, some very minor mistakes to some pretty major ones. The hardest part about running a business is that there are so many unknowns, and you’re the one in the driver’s seat; it’s hard to know what the right decision is. I’m lucky to have some amazing personal and professional support in my life to help alleviate a bit of that burden. It can also be difficult to manage time. Balancing having two young daughters and running a business presents a lot of challenges, and life is only getting busier as they get older.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in creating beautiful clothing for girls ages newborn through 8 years old and we’re known for creating clothing that takes girls from playground to party time. I’m proud of the fact that moms tell me every single day that their daughters don’t want to take off their cuteheads dresses. It’s pretty common for moms to buy our dresses for their special occasions and for the girls to want to wear them every day after that. I have a 4 and a 2-year-old, so I know how hard it is to get your kids dressed. They can be very opinionated! So when people tell me their kids are so comfortable and happy in their cuteheads that they don’t want to wear anything else, I know we’re doing something right.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is very entrepreneurial and scrappy, and I think people have a very business-oriented attitude. I also think we have a community of people who want to help and lift each other up. I’ve found a lot of support here. It’s easy to create a community of like-minded business owners if you look for it. I’m a big believer in paying it forward and in helping others, so I try to give the same support to new business owners as what was given to me.
