Meet Tikisha Walwyn of Island Printed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tikisha Walwyn.

Tikisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Father’s side of my family is from the Caribbean and the Caribbean Carnival is central to our culture. I started Island Printed because I wanted to show up representing where I’m from wear something that represented come from and comfortably wear my country’s flag at the same time. And that’s how the leggings were born!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. The good thing is, I didn’t expect it to be. In fact, I still have struggled as we speak. But I’m a very optimistic person and I believe in my brand. That helps me to keep going when things get tough.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Island Printed – what should we know?
Island Printed is a brand that represents the love, unity, and power of the Caribbean culture. Our mission is to promote the Caribbean culture with custom designed Caribbean flag leggings. We’re not just leggings, we’re a community; a place that allows individuals to represent where they come from and to share that passion with the world.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance, you’ll need it to get through the upside and downs of business. Optimism, things will literally appear impossible and you’ll need to see past it. Humility, you have to be able to take feedback, constructive or otherwise, and turn it into profit.

Second part of humility: you’re never too good to ask for help or advice. Creativity, it’s helpful to be able to flip a situation around or turn a loss into a win. Kindness, it’s the foundation of customer service and building partnerships. In the words of my mother, it’s nice to be nice.
