Today we’d like to introduce you to Malissa Dunnings.
Malissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As for me, I am a Louisiana native and have been in Houston since 2005. After college, I entered the financial services industry which is what brought me to Houston. The job that brought me here required an immense amount of travel, and after two straight years of living out of a suitcase, I’d had enough and transitioned to healthcare. The transition allowed for much more stability; however, that came at a price. I had free time on my hands to examine the path I was on and if the corporate life was meant for me.
In 2012, I suffered a severe back injury which required surgery and months of rehabilitation. Needing to stay active I joined a CrossFit box near my house, Crossfit Roughneck. That decision changed the trajectory of my life. For the first time in my life since my high school basketball days, I was excited about health and fitness. I knew I had to find some way transition into the industry, but I had no idea what that would look like. I looked into nutrition class, gym franchises, wellness coaching you name it I looked into it but couldn’t find anything that was uniquely me.
Knowing I desired something different professionally, yet unable to determine what that would be I opted to enter graduate school to earn my MBA. Entering graduate school is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Not only did I meet amazing, driven and likeminded people, one thing our professions always stressed was finding passion in what do. Their constant message of passion and purpose reinforced my drive and desire to find my fit in the health and fitness arena.
While scrolling through my Instagram feed one February evening, my search ended. I came across a popular Crossfitter post which had just had a DEXA scan. Finding it interesting, I searched for the technology in Houston for myself. Unable to find DEXA scans for body composition purposes, I decided at that moment this would be the business I would open.
This was a perfect fit I combine my two loves: data analysis and wellness into one business where I have the opportunity to impact the lives of others through proven wellness solutions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth…. wow that is hard to answer.
When I entered this business, I knew I would be introducing technologies and services to the industry that 99% of the population would not be familiar with or understood the benefits. Knowing those hurdles existed, our projections were realistic.
Hiring has been a struggle for me. I think one of the major mistakes I made during the interview process is I was looking for someone like me. I had to realize there is only one me and I needed to find someone who complimented my shortcomings and areas in which I am not proficient. That realization has saved me a lot of frustration.
