Meet Claudia Lau-Weiss of Peruvian Sweets by Claudia Lau in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Lau-Weiss.

Claudia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved baking since I was a kid. I came to Houston in 2005, and I always baked for my family and friends. At first, I never looked at it as a business, but my friends would always ask me to bake for them and eventually they started paying me. That is how I started!

I obtained the recipes from my sweet mother in law, Maggie, and they are 100% from scratch. She taught me all of her “secrets” in bakery. My most successful product is “ALFAJOR”, which is a sandwich cookie, filled with dulce de leche. I bake mostly every day, for friends, events, I do catering and deliver cakes to a local restaurant.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, I struggled finding the correct ingredients, and also deal with temperatures. Cakes used to melt easily.

Peruvian Sweets by Claudia Lau – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the owner and baker from Peruvian Sweets. Everybody knows me as the lady who bakes the ALFAJORES. I am proud of myself because every week I have new clients.

I bake the same day of delivery, for example, I have clients they can only pick up their order before going to work, at 7-8 am. I set my alarm at 5 am and start baking. Nothing is better than a fresh product.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me means that dreams are met. Hard work is the norm and I am always on the go. Success means getting back up after a fall. Failure is accepted but is always met with my all.

My criteria is met when I produce all my desserts from scratch.
