Art & Life with Ashley Shutter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Shutter.

Ashley, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up with a camera in my hand, at all times. With my last name being Shutter….I felt I was destined to be a photographer. What exactly I would enjoy photographing…now there was the big question! I was working on a cruise ship in Hawaii as a ship photographer 12 years ago when my first opportunity to try photographing weddings fell in my lap. Since that day, I never looked back, I love what I do, and it is my hope to capture every wedding as it unfolds…. the good, bad and the best! A wedding day is indeed…. a story and summation of the love between two people, true story…some of the “uh oh” moments and “secret loving” moments are always the best shots! <3

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a photographer. I am not just a “wedding” photographer. I love photographing anything on the water. I am a sailor 1st and a photographer 2nd. It is a big dream of mine to sail around the world, documenting my voyage and photographing as many couples, individuals and free-spirited people as I can! I was born on a sailboat since a baby, raised in an alternative lifestyle…and I flourish when around those who are like minded. Life is too short to not reach for your dreams! PS: I currently live aboard my sailboat solo, and often can be find flying a drone around documenting others with their sailboats/lifestyles.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The biggest challenge in my arena of photography/artistry is the over saturation of “phone photography”. Now a days just about everyone is carrying around a 12mp camera in their back pocket…and while these phones DO take good photos, the artistry of a talented photographer–no matter the genre needs to be recognized again. Yes, everyone can take photographs, but not everyone can take them well, or great. Seek out those who inspire you, and always look internally for inspiration as well!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
