Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Polly Heil-Mealey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born, raised, graduated high school and currently live here in Humble where the clinic is located. I started studying holistic health (lifestyle and diet) as a hobby when my children were quite young. When my husband was diagnosed with Cancer in 1998, I became intrigued with the alternatives. Sadly I did not have any knowledge of holistic supplements. We went the allopathic route, and he was over radiated and died of radiation poisoning.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth. I had a master’s degree in education before my first husband died, but I now had to start from the ground up with formal education. When we bought our current business, I had to take care of every detail and there was so much about running the business I did not know. I had to learn a good deal on the fly.
Please tell us about Abundant Health & Wellness Center.
We are a multi-disciplined holistic health care clinic. My husband and I own the clinic, but we lease space to other practitioners. A holistic doctor has the philosophy that the body can heal itself given the right nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, essential oils, homeopathy. The beauty of our practice is that we have the tools to assess the people who come to us, and we are able to help them heal their own bodies.
Our specialty seems to be an auto-immune disease, but we have cancer patients also. We also have healthy people who want to start a new way of health, and they come to use for help. We are known for fast results. Many times people start to feel better in as little as two to three days.
What sets us apart from others is our ability to assess the cause of the illness rather than just manage the symptoms sets us apart from other practices. We are not a one size fits all clinic. Each person receives a unique protocol which will work for him.
As a company, we are very proud of our accomplishments. In 2015, we were nominated and made the finalist for Small Business of the Year award, which is a Small Business Administration project. If I remember correctly, there were over 300 businesses in the competition. This year, I was named Physician of the Year by the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce. This is the first time a holistic practitioner of any kind has been honored by one of their Salute to Healthcare awards, which makes it very special to me.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not really change anything other than perhaps begin sooner. I received excellent business guidance from the Lone Star Small Business Development Center (I still meet with them at least annually), worked hard and followed the Lord’s leading. I think that combination has been a huge factor in our success.
