Meet Hope Maxwell of Spring Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Maxwell.

Hope, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child I was always drawn to exploring and had a thirst for knowledge especially the spiritual and unexplained. It wasn’t til I was in my late 20s after being in a heavy metal band that I realized I needed a balance in my life. I decided to become a massage therapist and while I was I met some amazing people including my Reiki master Gloria Minney. I was offered an opportunity to become certified as a Reiki practioner finished my massage school. I had taken a few yoga classes during this time and had some really unsatisfactory experiences and then was offered another opportunity to become a yoga instructor with Lex Gillian at The Yoga Institute of Houston. Upon completing this amazing training, I devoted my time and teaching to creating a space for people to come to feel like they belong, a place where age, appearance, background didn’t matter. A place where if you were a beginner you were not run of by the unfamiliar yogic terms, and it was affordable for people who really could benefit from yoga. We are small studio, with soulful teachers who want to help you reach whatever it is your looking for in yoga. Dedicated to community outreach, sharing yoga and alternative healing therapies.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, like any business we struggle with making ends meet and most of or teacher have other jobs. We are financed solely by our student’s contributions. So, Spring Yoga is a donation based studio. Although yoga is thousands of years old but, it’s still filtering into areas where people are just now understanding how good and life changing it can be. That being said we have good months and bad months.

Two things we always hear, number one, “I’m not flexible enough” that’s why you do yoga to become more flexible. And number two, “I just can’t quiet my mind.” We offer meditation classes to help people learn to become peaceful and still.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Spring Yoga – what should we know?
Spring Yoga offers yoga a variety of styles including Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa (flow) with touches of other styles as well. Meditation is very important to us so this is included in each class. We also offer special workshops, events, classes on anything alternative therapy. This includes essential oils, mantras, exploration of particular styles of yoga, as well as beer and yoga events at local bars like Jailhouse Saloon in Old Town Spring. Fitness is also important to us so we just added a class call Bang! Yoga which is a Fusion of cardio drum and yoga to rock/metal/ heavy music. We work with Give Back Yoga Foundation with monthly donation based park yoga where all funds go back to them to support all of these programs. This gets people out of their houses and the studio to enjoy the local beauty of our parks.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The love of helping people, all shapes, sizes and places in their lives. Devotion to showing people different was to become healthy so they can live long and happy lives.
