Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Jorgensen.
Cody, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always loved art, it helped calm myself down and gave me a place to release. I started drawing at a very young age, and got involved in anything that I could in the art world. It started out creating drawings of things that I wanted to hang on my walls, but continued to grow from there. I knew at a young age, that it was my passion. If I was having a hard time, I would take it to paper or a canvas. My mom understood, and helped foster that love.
Going to college, I knew that art was my passion, and I debated between graphic design and teaching. I ended up settling on teaching, after reflecting on my time working with the kids, as an art aide. I knew that I wanted to share that love and the knowledge that I had obtained.
My art has gone through various phases of styles and subject matter, but one trend that has remained are my human hearts and trees. Living in the Heights has really helped grow as an artist, as there are lots of opportunities nearby to create/sell/or get new inspiration.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Currently, I have two collections, and two styles that I bounce back and forth between. I have always loved painting, both with a brush and with spray paint. But, I also love the way resin can give a piece such depth, and can give the viewer something different depending on the light and angle, seemingly ever changing. In my resin work, I generally focus on human hearts and the trees, which represent the struggle and growth that I have gone through, and overcoming to create something imperfect, yet beautiful. On the lighter side, my pop art pieces started out of a love for color and shapes, along with relatable, as well as sometimes gay icons. I like to celebrate the universal love for these characters and the joy they have brought so many. This style is also very adaptable and works well with both animal and human portraits,
I also do commissioned pieces, sometimes resin pieces, and sometimes pop art portraits and pet portraits. Which, I really like to capture the detail, the moment, and the emotion. Even in my abstract work, I like some sense of detail or intricacy, which is sometimes added with the gold.
I want my artwork open to some interpretation, I really think that’s the beauty of art! People can see what they really need to fit how they are feeling or a way they relate to it. I know what it means to me, and I believe that’s visible, but sometimes it’s interesting to listen to others looking into my subconscious. Art is really personal, and exposes every emotion, whether you realize it when you are creating it, or not.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
I went into teaching, to help with the financial challenges. I teach art full time, and do my work on the side, which can leave me short on time to create my work. Sometimes it’s hard to afford the show fees, etc., to get your name out. But, I reinvest in myself, to grow. Whether it’s materials, display set up, or fees for a show. My best advice is to use your free time to create, invest in yourself (no matter how little), and don’t stop!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have shown with art shows curated by Dandee Warhol and Hardy and Nance Studios. I also keep work at venues like EQ Heights Coffee Shop. My mural can be seen at Doberman’s Bar and Grill, 519 South Shepherd St. My original work is available for purchase at EQ, various events. Original work along with prints are available online at codyjorgensen.com, and can be shipped anywhere. That is also where you can contact me to commission a custom work.
