Meet Hui Ouyang of YIN & YANG Healthcare in Friendswood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hui Ouyang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally a medical doctor in China, currently as a Doctor of Chiropractic and Licensed Acupuncturist, I am practicing in southern Houston areas, with clinic, teaching and research experience in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, as well as chiropractic manipulations.

I grew up in China in a doctor family of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ascending to his great grandfather who was a TCM doctor with great renown in my hometown. Besides learning from my family, I completed a 5-year full-time program of professional education majoring in acupuncture and TCM in 1993 with M.D. degree in China. After graduation, I had been working at a major hospital of Chinese medicine undergoing a 6-year residency training of TCM Orthopedics and accumulated extensive clinic experience on Chinese medicine specializing in acupuncture for pain management.

After moving to the US in 1999, I got intensive experience in acupuncture research by working as a research fellow in the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and a research scientist in Transneuronix research company. My papers were published in prestigious medical journals, including Gastroenterology, American Journal of Physiology, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, etc. My extraordinary research accomplishments resulted in Young Investigator’s Awards in the meetings of American Motility Society and the International Electrogastrography Society, and Posters of Distinction at Digestive Disease Week — the annual conference of American Gastroenterology Association.

At the meantime, I also passed all the national examinations on acupuncture and herbology (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine), and was certified and designated a Licensed Acupuncturist in the State of Texas (Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners).

In order to update knowledge of modern medicine, in order to adapt the great language and culture shock, I went back to school again in 2005, and graduated from Pasadena’s Texas Chiropractic College as Doctor of Chiropractic in 2008.

With the education from both China and United States, with the experience from both clinic practice and scientific research, I provide a unique integrated Chinese and western medicine (acupuncture, Chinese herbs, chiropractic and nutrition) for preventions and treatments of common diseases, especially anxiety/depression, allergy, GI diseases, musculoskeletal disorders and pain syndromes. The main players with sports injuries, from Houston Dynamo soccer team got great benefit from my treatments. My patient with PTSD treated were reported on New York Times as an example for acupuncture to treat pain more effectively than drugs.

Based on knowledge of research and clinic experiences, I also serves as a professor of Doctoral program of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) at three schools — American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) in Houston, American Academy of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) in Minneapolis and American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco. The courses I teach include the integrative medicine programs of master and doctoral degree, especially on acupuncture and manipulations.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road.

I was born and raised in China. I was already 29 years old when I got to the US. The biggest struggle the language and culture shock.
