Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Mckee.
Sara, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve loved art since I was little. I became an art teacher in 2010 and have been teaching in Sugar Land public schools since then.
In 2016 a friend introduced me to the owner of Bisong Art Gallery and after showing them some of my ceramic works, they invited me to show at their gallery during the art crawl. After that I showed work at The House of Blues, Generators Playground, RAW, and a variety of other art communities around Houston. This year, I’m helping a team with an instillation sculpture at Burning Man.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I work with lots of different media as an art educator, but enjoy figurative ceramics the most. My ceramic works are hand sculpted with various types of earthen ware clay. Then they are fired and hand glazed or painted. My art is inspired by nature, literature and pop-culture. I also like to tell stories with my art that connect to the human, emotional, journey. I want to create art that connects people to story and builds comfort, joy, or peace through that connection.
How can artists connect with other artists?
As an art teacher, I see about 200 students a day. I value my alone time. However, I do love creating community with other artists in the city. Going to art events, gallery openings or meeting up for live sketchbook sessions helps to bridge the interaction gap. It took me a while to meet more artists, but I participated in a local non-profit, Grassroots Art in Action, that helped to connect me with some amazing creatives. There are so many local art Meetup’s and communities that are building through Facebook. I suggest reaching out for those events for building that connection. Also, submitting work to shows helps you meet more artists and expand that portfolio.
