Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Bush.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While working my way through college, I started my own contract bookkeeping firm. The first 10 years I was a solo practitioner while I finished school, got married, had two fabulous daughters and moved twice. In 2010, my practice was growing so much that it was time to either grow with it or start turning down clients!
Well, turning away business seemed foolish, so I officially launched Better Bookkeepers on July 1, 2010. Through word of mouth and our relationships with our referral sources, Better Bookkeepers has grown to a staff over 15, serving clients all over the state of Texas through our two offices in The Woodlands and Georgetown.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh no! I don’t think any business ever is. If you didn’t have to work at it, it wouldn’t be work. People are at the heart of every business. And clear expectations and clear communications are what smooths out the struggles.
In 2012, I took on three partners. In 2016, some things occurred with two of the partners that sadly forced our business relationship to end. I learned a TON through that experience.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Better Bookkeepers story. Tell us more about the business.
Better Bookkeepers has a unique approach to bookkeeping! We tailor everything to the client. If they want on-site bookkeeping, we do that! If they need us to handle payroll only, we do that! If they have an internal bookkeeper that they want to be reviewed or trained, we do that!
Our motto is “Your business doesn’t fit inside a box – Neither should your accounting services.” We truly believe that. we think outside the box and innovate constantly to serve our clients best interests!
With our team approach, we benefit from peer review and peer knowledge. As a company, we serve all industries, with individual specialists within our staff.
I am most proud of my amazing team. They truly care about their clients and what is best for their business. We want our clients to grow to a level where they outgrow us!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our industry continues to get more and more cloud-based. I don’t see that changing! The players in the accounting market will be those that are embracing the change and growing with it.
Long gone are the ways of paper ledger sheets, soon long gone will be the way of paper receipts! Apps that store and track all your expenses are the way of the future!
