Today we’d like to introduce you to Laney Gillespie.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always thrived in creativity and have always dabbled in different kinds of art. I began having an interest in photography during high school. I would use my dad’s camera here and there, but never really did much more. I moved to Houston in 2008 and a friend of mine was doing photography and had bought a new camera. She offered to give me her previous camera and shoot a wedding with her. After that event, I was hooked. I began taking more and more photos. I started by taking photos of family and close friends. Then, over time, my hobby grew into a small business. I developed a Facebook page and an Instagram account to help my business grow. I am currently working on launching my website!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. There are seasons when clients are consistently booking photos and seasons when you don’t have as many bookings. I have to work hard to advertise and try to get my name out there. Also, photography is my second job. I have to work really hard to manage my time as well. Eventually, I want photography to be my full-time job. Another struggle has been learning how to manage my own small business. I decided to reach out to different people who have started their own small businesses to get tips and ideas from them.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crimson Sparrow Photography – what should we know?
I am a photographer. I photograph families, children, events, and artistic settings. I recently started photographing newborns and lifestyle photo shoots.
I also currently work as an elementary teacher. I teach children with special needs. I have been able to provide photo sessions to families with special needs children as well.
What I love about photography is that I get to capture memories for people through a lens. It is a job where I feel like I get to use my talent to bless the lives of others.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I have always been a very driven person. Someone who sets goals. As a child, I was taught to work hard and be disciplined. I think being taught these 2 things has helped me be successful as an adult.
