Meet Garrett Theriot of Timberline Fitness in Montrose and Willowbend

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Theriot.

Garrett, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Timberline Fitness was started by Dean Theriot in the Montrose area in 1996. His goal was to bring a personal approach to fitness and provide the very best gym experience for the people of Houston. As Timberline grew, more trainers with the same vision were hired. Additional programs were added, like Spin and Pilates, and the word of top notch service, clean facility, and family-like atmosphere spread like wildfire. Today, Timberline Fitness specializes in personal training individuals and groups of all sizes, while also offering membership. It provides boot camps, Mat and Reformer Pilates, spin and run classes, as well as yoga and stretching sessions. Timberline also has 2 massage therapists on staff. Each trainer is a there because this is their career, When you come to Timberline, you aren’t training with a college kid with a part-time job of some amateur bodybuilder just looking to make a few bucks. You are with a trained, educated professional whose goal is to give you the best, personalized experience while you are in our gym. Timberline has recently opened a second location in the Willowbend/Meyerland area inside The Zone Sportsplex, managed by Dean’s son, Garrett.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When Timberline opened in 1996, personal training was not such a widespread business, so the concept wasn’t wholly accepted as it is today. Also, Montrose was not the same attractive area it is today, so people weren’t as eager to venture to the area to check us out. Long hours and slow growth were a struggle, like any business, but it all pays off in the end.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Timberline Fitness specializes in personal training. While we do offer several different mediums for physical fitness, our bread and butter is still guiding our clients through their workouts each day. We are definitely known first and foremost for personal training, followed by Pilates training and classes. What I am most proud of is the Cheers-like atmosphere that we have created. No membership cards, just trainers there to greet you by name each day. That is also what sets us apart in my opinion. No other gym I have ever been to promotes that kind of community.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Louisiana playing sports, but I was actually a very out of shape child until I really started to focus on physical fitness. Once I got it figured out, the gym became a daily trip for me. It allowed me to excel in athletics and open up opportunities for me that would otherwise be unavailable. After high school, I attended LSU where I earned a Finance degree while managing a nutritional supplement store. After graduation, I moved to Houston to work for my father at Timberline while I interviewed for jobs in finance. The longer I worked at Timberline, the more I loved it and the rest is history.
