Today we’d like to introduce you to Yves Goyatton.
Yves, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a native of France, I discovered sculpture by chance when I was pursuing a graphic design degree. I was immediately passionate about it and never completed the graphic design degree as I started to put my focus more on sculpting. I came to this country in 1999 to pursue my passion for art. I arrived here in New York, barely speaking English with just enough savings to buy an old Ford Escort. From there, I started my journey to Los Angeles, where I drove for seven days across the country. I remember being both fascinated by the beauty of the scenery and scared in case my car would break down – I was terrified of the idea of needing to make a phone call for help because I could barely speak English.
I finally made it to Los Angeles, and a few days later, my car burst into flames! It was at that time that I realized this would be quite an adventure.
From there, I began courses at El Camino College in Los Angeles where I built upon my introductory knowledge of sculpture and studied English. Three years later, I earned a Sculpture Degree with Honors from Monterey Peninsula College in California.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create bronze, sometimes fragmented figurative sculptures. I grew up surrounded by classical sculptures in France. The beauty of the human form has always fascinated me – and the form and shapes of architecture have inspired me. My current body of work represents this fascination for architectural shapes and their juxtaposition with human form. My work has taken this concept literally, combining the human form and the abstracted shapes of modern architectural landscapes. I believe my work refers to man in an architectural, urban, social environment. In most of my work, I combine my own sense of aesthetic and concept with the intention to generate an emotional response. Sometimes, I try to raise consciousness about a subject that has touched me or it can be the result of a process where I found satisfaction in a refined aesthetic.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
The love to create, pushing boundaries, the love to progress, to evolve… enjoy the process, have fun, learn from others if you try to make a living out of your passion, don’t give up! Tenacity, perseverance will pay off
I wish I had discovered sculpture younger in my life…
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You will find most of my work on my website. Also, since 2010, I have been honored to have been selected as a member at the Carmel Art Association in Carmel, California. You will find some of my work there, and a few other pieces are featured at the Post Ranch Inn gallery in Big Sur, California. Starting in 2017, I have been touring around the US participating in many jury-selected art fairs – which has allowed me to have a personal connection with collectors, and I really enjoy that. You can find the dates of all future shows on my website – https://www.yvesgoyatton.com/shows.
