Sheri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My fairytale starts back in 2009, when I moved from my hometown of New Orleans to Orlando, Florida, where I had the pleasure of working as a princess performer for Walt Disney World Resorts. For four years, I was swept up in a world of fantasy, getting to know a multitude of beloved princess characters and wonderful people.
My adventures with the company took me all the way to Hong Kong Disneyland, where I lived and performed for 7 months. Upon returning to the U.S., I was given the opportunity to join Feld Entertainment’s Disney Live! family. For two years, I was able to travel the world and perform in the stage shows, Mickey’s Rockin Road Show and Three Classic Fairy Tales. It was like a dream!
After getting married at the end of 2012, it was time to hang up my glass slippers and move to Houston. Although my time with Disney had come to an end, my desire to perform was still as strong as ever. I soon signed with an agent here in Houston and began working as a local film & television actress. I was thrilled to be acting again, but
still felt a strong pull towards all of the wonderful princesses I had gotten to meet during my time with Disney. I knew my ‘princess days’ weren’t over as I began to research ways of bringing the magic of those characters to the children of Houston. My research led me to local party companies that I felt were lacking in both quality and customer service. With my background, incredible training, passion, and personality, I knew I could fill this void for the people of Houston. Working for the top entertainment company in the world, taught me more than I could have ever dreamed, but for this, I knew it had given me all of the best tools needed to run a company I would be proud of.
My goal with Your Party Princess was, and still is, to bring the magic of our favorite princess characters to life with quality costuming and genuine interactions. I wanted to show the little Princes and Princesses of Houston that their cartoon role models are not only real, but are also their very best friends.
So, in February of 2013, I started Your Party Princess with a blog and a blue dress. Four years later, we have a beautiful website, eight princess characters, three trained team members, over 1,700 Facebook followers, and moms who choose our company year after year. More importantly, for four years, Your Party Princess has made dreams come true.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel confident in saying no entrepreneur necessarily walks a smooth road. There are bumps and turns along the way that you simply learn to navigate as best as you can. I’ve learned that even though I am in business to make children’s dreams come true, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies.
Unfortunately, early on, I was a bit blindsided by other companies’ aggressive, competitive behaviors. This only reminded me why Your Party Princess stands out. I’m not running a business solely to make profits and offer cheap services. We stand for things like quality, kindness, and generosity, and hold ourselves to the highest of standards.
In this day and age where big corporations are taking over, being a small, locally owned business can be a bit daunting. There are now national party entertainment companies out there that are based out of another state entirely. These companies are able to offer cheap services by hiring local girls on an event basis without training them, putting them in poorly designed costumes, and paying them very little. Unfortunately, to some customers, the cheaper price seems like the better deal. However, low quality is just not something Your Party Princess stands for.
Just in case you haven’t gotten that quality is our top priority yet, let me harp on it one more time! When it comes to hiring performers, finding the best of the best can be a bit like finding a needle in the haystack. At Your Party Princess, our team members are not only talented actresses and singers; they are kind, respectful, and (not limited to) dependable ladies who share the same passion for creating magic as I do. My team and I love working with kids and that truly shows.
