Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi Bishop.
Jodi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in retail for 20 years. The last 14 years of my retail career were working for Neiman Marcus where I learned about luxury goods and quality craftsmanship. After my early retirement from NM in 2010, my mom moved to Houston from Sedona, Arizona to help me remodel a house my husband and I purchased in the Memorial Area. I knew I didn’t want cookie cutter furnishings, so we started shopping for antique and vintage pieces. We would go into Memorial Antiques and Interiors almost daily buying and just getting inspiration. After the house was finished, we missed our buying trips and thought “we can do this.” I wanted to have something part time my mom and I could do together, so we bought and curated a collection of goods and presented it to Memorial Antiques and Interiors and were put on a wait list and got in six months later. Now four years later we are in Memorial Antiques and Interiors, AG Antiques in the Heights, Feliz Interiors in Tanglewood and we have a warehouse in Spring Branch and we sell on Etsy and Chairish. We sell antique, vintage and modern furniture and home decor but our specialty is mid-century and vintage barware is the heart of our business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had successes and struggles learning along the way what works and what doesn’t. We started off doing small markets where we were unknown to now doing our 7th show at Marburger Farm Antique Show in Round Top, Texas where we have repeat customers who search us out. I buy only what I love so that if it doesn’t sell, I can put it in my own house much to the dismay of my husband.
Please tell us about Bird Dog Interiors.
My business name comes from my love and ownership of hunting dogs. My logo is actually a portrait of our beloved German Shorthair Pointer which I had commissioned as a gift to my husband before our dog passed away. He is now memorialized on our business cards etc…
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My brother and I were very close to my grandparents and they would have parties entertaining my grandfathers business associates and we would sneak out of our rooms upstairs and look down through the stair rails and watch as they were all dressed up with cocktails in fancy glasses in their hands and smoking cigarettes in long filters. It seemed very glamorous. I believe that is where I got my love of entertaining.
