Meet Estefania and Natalia Hernandez of Xaibe Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Estefania and Natalia Hernandez.

Estefania and Natalia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hola Amigos! We decided to start Xaibe Boutique last year because we always had the idea to open our own business while being able to help others. We were both born in Mexico City and are very proud of our Mexican culture and traditions. Mexico is a beautiful country with many rich traditions and we enjoy sharing it with others while expanding people’s knowledge.

The word “Xaibe” comes from the Mayan language meaning ‘crossroads.’ It is a structure found in Coba where the Mayans used to meet and exchange goods. What does that have to do with us? Well, here in Xaibe Boutique we are the crossroad between culture, artisans and potential customers. We know that in Mexico and Latin America is hard for an artisan to sell its products. Our goal is to share with you the talents and knowledge of these artisans and help them make a profit where they can sustain their families.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has mostly been a smooth road because we both enjoyed working together. Our family and friends have been very supportive and we are very happy to have all of this support. Each challenge that we face helps us grow more individually and business wise. We welcome new challenges and are always looking to see what we can learn from them. One of our major challenges was thinking of a name of our business that will represent us and the business itself. It took us six months to think of the right name for our business. Natalia was the one that thought of the name Xaibe on a trip she had to Cancun, Mexico when she visited Coba. We both loved the name Xaibe Boutique because we clearly think that it represents our business and ideas. This is because both of us are a blend of American and Mexican culture and we want others to appreciate this marvelous crossroad of culture and traditions.

Another challenge has been working full-time jobs while having our own business. Sometimes its hard to balance time for family, friends, Xaibe Boutique and our jobs. Thankfully, our family and friends have been very supportive by coming to our events and helping us promote our business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Xaibe Boutique is a culture at its finest. Xaibe Boutique brings you handmade Mexican and Latin cultural designs. Our mission is to expand the beautiful crafts and works by the artisans all over Mexico. We want to educate the public about the work of each artisan, so they can understand the labor that goes into each product. As a family-owned business, we put our love and integrity in everything we do.

What were you like growing up?
Natalia: I have always been very creative since I was little, and art has always been my favorite hobby. That is how the idea of creating a platform where I could sell my art and also sell artisans’ art came to mind. What I enjoy about painting is that I can be in my little world. At that moment I just let my creativity flow and it also allows me to relax and just create. Also, since I was little, I have enjoyed helping and assisting others. My mom always tells the story of me volunteering to help pass the cake to my classmates in my elementary class every time there was a birthday. That passion for helping others and my creativity is what motivated me to start Xaibe Boutique and what helps me come up with new ideas for the business. One of my favorite things is networking and collaborating with other businesses. My sister’s and my personality definitely play a great role in our business.

Estefania: One of my favorite childhood hobbies was and still is reading books. These books transported me to many other places. As a grew older, I not only wanted to read about these new places but inspired me to experience them myself.

Currently, traveling has become one of my top passions. Without reading these stories in the book that I read I don’t think I would have as much interest in traveling. My traveling experiences have opened my knowledge about other cultures and I want to expose others to this passion of mine. This is why I wanted to have a business that educates others about my culture and traditions just as books have taught me. I major in marketing and this is why I enjoy researching and learning new marketing trends. I’m very logical and I like working behind the scenes like directing a photoshoot instead of modeling the clothes. While Natalia is very creative and enjoys networking with others. This is why when you combine all of our strengths is what make our business amazing and has helped us grow more each year!
