Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruben Salazar.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Houston. My mother was an entomologist and my father was more on the artistic side. I started my business Bug in The Box two years ago, but I have been making insect boxes since I was a kid.
Please tell us about your art.
I make ethically sourced preserved exotic butterflies and insects in shadow frames and boxes. All of my insects come from farms and sanctuaries around the world after they have passed away naturally. My inspiration are my parents. My mother taught me how to pin and preserve insects. I was also inspired by my travels to different places around the world and seeing all the different and unique insects that the world has. My partner Tristan and I love sharing our knowledge about different insects that most people would never see or know existed.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think conditions for artists today here in Houston are good and getting better. There is lots of new interest in art shows and art in general by the Houston community in recent years. Going out to art shows and galleries and supporting local art is the best way to encourage Houston artists.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I do art shows and Pop up shows all around Houston every weekend. The best way to know where I will be showing next is to follow my Instagram. I also have an art studio at the Silos on Sawyer. Studio #132 upstairs.
