Today we’d like to introduce you to Mac Scherer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The three founders of the company Tim, Jacob, and I all went to high school together. We were all on various paths, but we all knew each other. Jacob was artistic, Tim was tech savvy, and I played sports. After graduating from high school in 2012, I went to Texas State University to study nursing, Tim worked at HP, and Jacob moved to San Marcos to bartend. Every break in school I got, Jacob and I would pool all the money we could find together (usually about $300) and buy plane tickets to some adventurous place like Colorado or Utah. If we could afford the plane tickets there, we would worry about the rest of the expenses when we got there. This resulted in a lot of nights couch surfing.
These trips became the norm between Jacob and I and we started documenting them on go-pros and cell phones. After about a year of having fun, I started to have an internal crisis with school, and I realized I was heading for a career that wouldn’t fulfill me. I always had serious entrepreneurial tendencies growing up all the way from door to door lawn care service to selling every single thing I could find on eBay. I just absolutely loved business. So this turmoil hit me hard. I dropped out of school and tried to find someone who could help me find my way because I didn’t have a plan. I found an entrepreneur from Lebanon who took me under his wing and taught me to buy and sell cars.
After a year of the car business and continuing to make videos of travel one video online with Gary Vaynerchuck got enough exposure to catch the attention of a local business.
The founder then reached out and asked if we would make videos for him. This was the first time it had ever occurred to us that this could be a viable business and it was like igniting a fire. I called Jacob and Tim and asked if they would be willing to quit what they were doing and take the risk of trying to create our own future. That was almost two years ago now and since we have grown our team to 4 full-time people and two part-time. We get to work with some of the most influential brands and people around the US, and we travel quite a bit for it.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s still a struggle built up from 80 hour weeks, sleepless nights, intense clients, etc. But we are working to scale our team to multiple locations and work to keep providing cinematic content for people to tell their stories to the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a mix. Some doors just seem to fall right in front of us, and we couldn’t be more thankful, but the other half of the time it feels like trudging miles of quicksand with no sense of direction, no rules, and no one to call for help.
Most of the struggle is balancing keeping current clients happy, staying organized with all of the data we handle and generating new business. I don’t have enough hands
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Creator House Media – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Creator House Media believes that every company, no matter the size, should have the ability to share their story. We specialize in video solutions for businesses and events.
What sets us apart: we offer a style of cinematic visually compelling video that clients continually come back for. We operate in a way that allows us to be unbelievably mobile.
Often times our clients ask us to work in San Francisco or NY and assume we office out of those cities. I’m most proud of the fact that none of the founders have any degrees in film or production yet we are still able to satisfy and service some of the biggest brands in the world.
It just shows you that you are capable of achieving greatness and providing an excellent product no matter what any system says.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans for the future involve immense internal systematization. We need to be extremely organized going into 2019. There’s so much video flowing in and out from clients the last thing you can afford to be is unorganized. We are also hiring a sales staff to pursue specific verticals, so we aren’t so heavily reliant on word of mouth business.
We would also like to make connections with the best filmmakers in major cities all over to incorporate their work to continually improve our offering to clients.
