Meet Hanh Tran of Hanh Gallery in Inner Loop and River Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanh Tran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hanh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Even as a child, I knew that I wanted to have a job that I loved, and that whatever I did, I wanted to be passionate about it. Before opening Hanh Gallery, I worked in hospital system administration. That job was the stepping stone that allowed me to pursue my passion for art. As a self-taught artist, I opened Hanh Gallery thirteen years ago, and I get to do what I love every day.

I have grown my business not only through sales of my original artworks and commissioned pieces, but also through my outreach and teaching of art to the next generation. So many children lack access to art education, and I believe art allows people to connect, renew and establish meaning. Our children need that.

Another part of my business, the retail therapy side, allows me to offer fun and unique pieces for clients to use in their everyday lives, such as hand-painted Hanh cuffs, hand-painted Hanh bags and even shoes! This part of my business grew organically – I often love to add my artistic flair to things I wear. For instance, I was in need of a handbag for a gala, and I couldn’t find one I liked, so I decided to paint my own. A woman bought the handbag off my arm at the gala, and the idea for hand-painted Hanh bags was born!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest obstacle an artist faces is the valuation of their art. Even when an artist has a very straightforward approach to pricing, some consumers feel that pricing is negotiable.

Art is so subjective, some people are going to love a piece, and others are not. But as an artist, each piece you create is unique – there is no other piece exactly like it. That is value in itself, especially in today’s world.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hanh Gallery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am known for my heavy, thick strokes that create a three-dimensional effect with oil on canvas. My method allows me to really evoke emotion with my artwork, and I can really bring a subject to life on a canvas. This method is also evident in the retail therapy items I create. My hand-painted cuffs are all created with texture, as are the Hanh bags. Texture is part of everything I create!

Outreach is a big part of who I am and what I do. Through donations of my original pieces, and well as through work with my Art + Wellness program that allows me to serve patients and families of patients facing health challenges, I have worked with numerous local and national charities. Among others, Sunshine kids, North Cypress Medical Hospital and Helping A Hero. I am most proud of being able to positively impact and influence the lives of others with my art.

Art lessons and painting parties are another fun part of what I do. In an individual or group setting, I get to help others create in a fun and relaxed environment, and seeing others grow through art is so rewarding.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to just being able to focus 100% on painting. My goal is to maintain my gallery in the city, but have a farm out west where I can just go be in nature and paint.
