Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Irvin.
Mimi Irvin, known as the vintage influencer in corporate America is far from ordinary. With a B.S in Electrical Engineering from Southern University and A&M College, Mimi has over 16 years of experience in the corporate world. However, there is more to her story.
Ms. Irvin started on a whim and created a fashion blog called Corporate Chic on Facebook in 2013 to inspire women to think outside the box with their corporate fashion, while accomplishing it on budget. Only within a couple of months after her “whim blogging” one of her social media confirmations of being a fashionista was being voted as the Vizions IN Fashion Online Contest Winner in 2013.
Ever since, then she has been recognized by many, such as; 2016 Houston’s most Fashionable, 2017 Houston’s Most Influential Trailblazer recipient, 2017 Top 20 under 40 professionals in ENR (Engineering News Record) Magazine, 2017 brand ambassador for Magpies & Peacock which is a nonprofit 501c3 design house based in Houston, Texas and Ms. Houston Vintage 2016, panelist and featured influencer for major hair brands such as Cantu, Curls and Sally’s Beauty and to top that off she is a Pro-Fitness Athlete.
Mimi took her passion and influence she organically created and started her very own online Shop MeYe Label (pronounced MY Label) that resells vintage clothing and designed accessories called MeYe (MY) Chic Bow Ties. Mimi’s mission is to inspire women that they can “Dress the Part, Shop Smart”. (www.meyelabel.com)
Now, Mimi has embarked on an amazing outreach initiative she started called “got STEM style?” which evolved from being asked to be a part of the panel discussion for the 2018 Discover E Global Marathon topic “Creative Engineer” (Right brain meets left brain).
She states “STEM empowers your knowledge, STYLE empowers your expression”. Ms. Irvin continues to celebrate other fellow women who have a STEM background but are also doing amazing creative things by sharing their story on IG, FB and LinkedIn.
Ms. Irvin no longer blogs under corporate chic anymore as she realized she is more than a corporate chic and now goes by @mimi.irvin on her social media platforms. In summary; Ms. Irvin is a Fashionable Mom with fabulous HAIR, Vintage Influencer, Pro Fitness Athlete, STEM advocate and DREAMER!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey definitely was not a smooth ride and it’s still not a smooth road. I’ve been told, I am a corp-preneur meaning I still work my corporate job while striving to take entrepreneurship with MeYe Label and my program “got STEM style?” to the next level.
My advice is to never give up and build your network. There is no reason to “reinvent” the wheel. Link up with genuine resources that are willing to share their entrepreneurial testimonies so that you can learn from that. Remember it’s a journey and it takes time!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about “MeYe Label” and “got STEM style?” – what should we know?
I’ve leveraged my corporate background by showing women they can dress bold in the workplace and I created an experience for women to shop MeYe Label online. It specifically markets vintage lovers and women who are not afraid of being different. I’m known for being the vintage influencer in corporate America that advocates STEM with style through my program “got STEM style?”
Because of the that I’m most proud that my brand has come full circle. I am able to sell clothing I love and tying it to my STEM background to give back to the community; specifically, women and young girls communicating they can have style with a STEM background. My goal to set myself apart is to provide an experience of not only selling clothes but MeYe Label is means taking clothing, accessories, advocacy or whatever it may be and making it yours through your own eyes. That’s why I spelled “MeYe” pronounced MY that way and the rest is history.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Some of my favorite bloggers are @StylePantry, @Kirstiemydear. Great fashion podcasts that I listen to from time to time are: girlboss radio, pop fashion and great STEM focused podcast are: How I Built This, Biz Chix, Munchin’ with Moguls. I am currently reading “Becoming” by Michelle Obama – It encompasses all things I try to communicate with my brand. You can be anything you want to be while maintaining who you are with Style. I definitely adding this to your reading selection.
