Check out Katie Charlesworth’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Charlesworth.

Katie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
When I was fourteen my brother gave me an old camera of his, showed me how to use it and I fell in love with photography. From that moment on, I spent all my free time learning about photography and taking photos of everyone and everything.

Once in high school, I took a photography class my sophomore year and had a very encouraging teacher. He told me that I had an eye for photography and talent unlike any other he had seen in a long time. He pushed me to do photography as a career, so for college, I decided to go for photography.
It was during high school that I realized I loved portraiture, fashion photography and getting as creative with it as possible. This is when I got into shooting with models. It was so fun for me to be able to dress someone up, put them in a flower bush and take photos of them.

In college, I got my associates degree in photography from Daytona State where I learned all about studio photography, portraiture, flash photography, product photography and many other areas. Even though I loved learning about different areas of photography, I loved shooting people more.

Since then, I’ve been home, trying to expand my photography business. I shoot family photos, senior photos, weddings, prom photos, modeling portfolios, couples, honestly, anything that involves people I love. It’s been a journey and it’s only just begun.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a creative fashion/portraiture photographer. So, the art that I love the most is when I get to style a model, add accessories, help them with their hair and organize the environment around them as well as adding elements of my own. I love creating a scene and being as involved in the process as possible.
I love being involved like this and creating a scene because it makes me feel like I’m creating my own little world. I get flashes of visions in my head of what I can create and I instantly want to create it. I love taking the time to sit down and plan shoot ideas and then spending an hour or so setting it up. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to create the kind of art I do.

I don’t just sit someone down and snap a photo of them. I think about everything I want to do with lighting, with makeup, hair, accessories, clothing, what I can add, take away and I do everything in my power to make my vision happen.

I hope I can inspire people to work hard to create art. To orchestrate what you want and make it happen. Creative portraiture is a broad statement but I think it’s also really powerful.

Something I want people to know about my photographs is that I put my heart and soul into them. Each photo says something about me as a human being in either the way I created the image or how I see the world. My photographs are my passion and I love every one of them that I post.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I personally believe that everyone has their own definition of success and there isn’t one particular meaning to it. For me, it’s about simply believing in myself and striving to do always do my best.
I feel like as an artist it can be easy to compare yourself to the other artists around you and feel like you aren’t as “successful” as they are but I think if you are doing the best you can and trying to grow then, you will continue to succeed.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
