Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Beckwith.
Erin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a doctor. Most of my high school and college days were spent working to achieve that particular goal. I was very focused and determined to get there on my specific timeline. Meanwhile, to find some sort of creative outlet, I picked up my camera from high school and starting capturing images that I loved.
I was taking an English class called, “Online Writing” and our assignment for the semester was to create and maintain a blog. Since I had just become the proud new owner of a puppy, I decided to blog about our adventures together. So I started blogging and taking pictures to accompany my thoughts, and I started to fall in love with photography again because it was meaningful to me. I found myself drawn towards emotional images and documenting memories.
Specifically, I loved looking at newborn photographer’s work because you could almost feel the overwhelming love this new mom had for her brand new baby; it felt so genuine (because it was!!). In 2010, I photographed my first newborn and instantly I was hooked. I spent many years soaking up as much knowledge as I could by photographing hundreds of newborns and mentoring with the most talented newborn photographers in the country. And now here I am, almost nine years in and I feel like I’m living a dream!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that with a whole lot of hard work and determination, your meandering road will actually end up looking pretty smooth. Looking back on the past nine years, I think the biggest struggle for me is knowing my limits. When you are your own boss, I think it’s almost harder to give yourself some grace and some time off. I have to know when to say “no” even when I always want to say “yes.”
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a birth, newborn and family photographer. My goal is capture real moments that you can look back on when your children are grown and easily go back to that time of your life and almost hear the giggles and feel that baby’s head on your chest.
I’m most proud of the relationships from all my amazing clients that keep coming back to me year after year. I hope that when families come to me, they feel like themselves. I don’t want to just give posed portraits, I want to give real looks, genuine connection and those emotional images I’ve always been drawn to. I hope that’s what sets me apart.
I also just started teaching a photography class for moms who want to learn how to use their DSLR camera called Capturing Your Everyday by Erin Beckwith. So many new moms ask for a new camera so they can capture those fleeting, everyday moments but quickly become overwhelmed with how to learn to use it.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I couldn’t do what I do without the support of my husband! He is the one behind the scenes cheering me on when I feel overwhelmed, doing my taxes, and picking up the slack at home when it’s Christmas card season! I’ve always mentored with some amazing photographers; Kelley Ryden and Tracy Raver, Rachel Vanoven and Erin Tole.
