Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Miller.
Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Starting at a young age, I knew I wanted to be in a helping profession. I have always valued deep, authentic relationships with people and knew that I wanted to use that strength in my career one day. My personal life experiences led me through my own journey of loss and healing. By having a network of people in my corner throughout those difficult times, I was able to feel safe, encouraged and empowered. I knew that one day I wanted to give back to my community and be there for others the way that my support system had been there for me.
I earned my Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Sciences with specializations in Addictive Disorders and Recovery Services, Education and Human Development and Family Studies from Texas Tech University. My first internship was working with adolescents in a treatment center which focused on addiction and eating disorders. This internship further fueled my desire to become a psychotherapist and allowed me to learn from incredible clinicians.
I moved to Houston to pursue my Master’s of Education Degree in Counselor Education and Clinical Psychology. At the same time, I started working in an emergency psychiatric treatment center, where I remained until my LPC internship at The Center For Creative Resources began. I also became a certified school counselor and have worked in elementary, middle and high school settings. After the birth of my daughter, I decided to leave the school setting to focus on my private practice, my doctoral degree and spend more time with my growing family.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to where I am today has been challenging. I knew from an early age what I wanted to do but I didn’t have a roadmap of how to get there. I was the first woman in my family to complete a Master’s degree and the first to work in the mental health field. I felt like I was in unchartered territory but knew that I wanted to push through. I continued to work full time to put myself through school and learned a lot about myself in the process.
My advice to young women starting their career would be to surround yourself with people who encourage you and challenge you to chase your dreams and be your best self. I have been fortunate to have friends and mentors who believed in me when I didn’t know if I would make it and provided a safe space for me to be my authentic self. As women, I believe it is our responsibility to support and endorse each other so that we all can be the best that we can be.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Certified School Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. I specialize in working with children, teens, and adults who have experienced life transitions, trauma, loss, and chronic illness.
I believe what sets me apart is that I value a holistic, mind-body approach to natural healing. I am currently working toward my Ph.D. in Integrative Medicine with a specialization in clinical hypnosis so that I can better serve my clients. I believe each client is unique with individual strengths. I want to honor each client’s experiences and join them on their journey to becoming the best version of themselves. I feel with the right support and tools, our bodies and minds are capable of complete healing.
I am most proud of the work my clients do on a daily basis. My clients are strong and make showing up to work every day exciting and fulfilling! I cherish my time with them and feel honored that I get to be part of their journey.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
When I look back on my childhood experiences, what stands out the most is the relationships I had with a few key role models. I was fortunate to grow up with people in my life who modeled strength and perseverance for me. These people believed in me, encouraged me and showed me that life can be difficult, fun and exciting all at the same time. Something that I admired most about them was the way they all led with love, acceptance, and compassion, even in times of adversity. I believe my creativity, curious nature and passion for caring for others all came from them as well. Without these role models, I am not sure where I would be today.
