Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Lopez.
Shaun, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
What began as a film school dropout, due to the industry going in a direction I wasn’t wanting to take part in, kick-started my craft in visual art. I showed and sold art at numerous galleries around Houston, but the scene again wasn’t matching the direction I wanted to go. I moved to Austin to reset and began working on a farm to ground myself and my disciplines.
One day, someone at the farm told me there was a “Farm as Artist” exhibition, so I decided to give it a shot. To my success, I sold all my artwork and began to ignite the visual artist inside, as well as the film student. I got a job at a studio after the farm and started working on an exhibition I got invited to January 2017: Houston Press Artopia.
I sold numerous artwork and made after-sales of prints that secured I still had the passion in me. It is here I began to push for a more visual/photographic medium. While in Austin I would shoot engagements and wedding, but the repetitiveness was taking a toll. I moved back to Houston after Artopia and picked up fashion photography, and the rest is history…
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having to let go of screenwriting and video work I invested a lot of time studying.
Pushing pause on creativeness for a much needed hard reset to work out the metal hiccups and creative blocks.
Expo Limited – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started in Austin but became an interior designer when I moved back to Houston. It’s definitely been a symbiosis of execution and setting up photo shoots. I’m known for my Avant-garde approach to photography and set up of sets during shoots. I believe what sets me apart from others is the way I work (trade-secret) and my compensation for any talents times and patience.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success never goes out of style. In a world of 15 minutes of fame, it’s hard to sort out the overnight patriots to the devotees of any craft. I look for spectrum and diversity. I look for the Kubricks of any craft, where the next step is always a different genre or approach. I stay away from the Michael Bay’s, the same sh*t, different day.
