Meet Jodi Walsh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi Walsh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Toronto, Canada in 1947 under peculiar circumstances. A woman went into a maternity house, gave birth to me then went out the back door. A couple came in the front and took me home. They were the parents that raised me. I didn’t find out about this until I was in my teens. Instead of causing a problem as a teen it gave me strange freedom.

I have always followed my own path, and it always included design, art, music and creating. During the fall, I was around eight years old; my first design project was an outline of a house made of leaves. Clothing design during my teens and twenties turned into visual art during my thirties. I left Canada in 1967 and didn’t come to the US until 1980.

Living in the Far East, Africa, Europe, Middle East changed my life forever. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without travel.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Looking back, I really can’t see any major problems or struggles. That being said, it is somewhat of a problem when artists move. I had the same photographer for 20 years, same local vendors and local clients and galleries. Moving to the Houston area from Washington DC I had to build new relationships for all areas of my work and studio.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Defining success is difficult. I feel privileged to be an artist, and I consider each piece a success in some form. I have had some of the best mistakes over the years that have lead me down a new and exciting path. Walking into some one’s home or office and seeing them live with my work every day is a thrill.

Art is so personal and is usually purchased from the heart. It feels very special to have my work in someone else’s space. All the successful artists I have known personally have one thing in common. They are all disciplined to work in some form on their creative careers everyday.
