Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Golvach.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been playing music my entire life and was born into a family of musicians. I played drums in high school with a band called The Dead Revolt until my sophomore year of college when my older brother and bassist passed away suddenly at the age of 25. After that, I took six months completely away from listening, playing or even thinking about music. Eventually, I knew that the only way to overcome survivors guilt and live my life for my brother Spencer was to embrace the gift that he left behind in this world for me. That’s what led me to start Den Mother (what originally was a solo project), and the inspiration Spencer left for me is the heartbeat of Den Mother. I don’t write songs specifically about him, but every single Den Mother release will be dedicated to his memory because our music would’ve been brought into the world without Spencer Golvach and his forever lasting impact on my life. The main goal of my music career is to make him proud, f*ck everyone else’s opinion, even my own.
Please tell us about your art.
In Den Mother, it’s usually my vision, but in the past year I decided that letting the other three contribute would our music a lot more well rounded and interesting, and it did. I write each instrumental either by myself or with the help of Alec and Wynton and Anthony, and I make up the vocal writing team. Some of the messages I wish to put out are:
– (first and foremost) Anti-suicidal messages
– You can create a healthy and hard drug-free grieving process for yourself no matter how far you feel you’ve fallen
– Music comes from something else. We don’t write it. We instead are all portals that bring pre-existing art into this dimension through the mind and soul. This is why I believe that I feel god (whatever that means) or a god/origin type presence in my music when it’s at its most heartfelt.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
See the potential in other artists and remember that they sometimes can be very early on their timeline in their craft. I’ve seen some other artists make lives in music for themselves from the most humble of beginnings.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
