Meet Mandy Breshears of Sublime Salon TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Breshears.

Mandy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been involved in the beauty industry for as long as I can remember. I literally grew up in a hair salon! My stepmom owned a salon in a suburb part of New Orleans, and I started shampooing hair and assisting stylists at the tender age of 12. During my downtime, I would just sit and watch. Wonder. Learn. I continued working at the salon until I moved to Baton Rouge for college.

Like many college students, I struggled with a major. I wanted to be a pharmacist. But I also wanted to be a teacher. I thought while I was trying to figure that out, I should go to beauty school, graduate and start making some money. I attended the Aveda Institute in Baton Rouge while simultaneously taking classes at LSU. It was tough! Once I graduated from Aveda, I decided to take this part of my career path full speed ahead. And I haven’t looked back!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been anything but smooth! But I’m thankful it wasn’t always easy. Those challenges shaped me into the stylist I am today. One of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was realizing that I’m not in an industry that’s black and white. I tend to think with the mathematical & scientific side of my brain, so stepping out of that mindset and stepping into the artistic side wasn’t easy!

I found myself being very critical of my work. If I didn’t see perfect lines and angles in my artistry, I assumed I did something wrong. I remember thinking to myself when I first learned of the balayage technique, “Wait, what do you mean you don’t take clean partings and use foil to apply highlights?!?” It seemed so foreign to me!! But I’ve not only gotten comfortable with the artistic techniques of hairdressing, but I’ve learned to LOVE that part of the industry and appreciate it from a new perspective.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sublime Salon TX – what should we know?
Although we’re trained as cosmetologists in many aspects of the industry, I find myself drawn to creating beautiful blondes! Whether it’s through a foiling or balayage technique, I’m always excited to brighten the look of someone with some light accents to bring out the best of their facial features. As someone who isn’t a natural blonde, I’ve had to trial and error many methods to achieve a natural, soft look for myself, and I love to utilize that knowledge on my guests.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’ve been a salon owner for quite a while now. Before my move to Houston, I owned a salon in the quaint downtown of Denham Springs, Louisiana. It was a city known for its tight-knit community. My clients felt like family, and I treated them as such.

I think there is huge power in connecting with your clients and relating to them on a personal level. I’ve always strived to make every person who sits in my chair feel like they’re hanging out with an old friend.

I have been enjoying having Mandy do my hair for awhile now. She is very considerate and mindful of my needs. My husband and grandson like her, too. I highly recommend her to everyone!
