Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Trevino.
Marissa, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started learning photography at a young age. My dad was always taking photos of everything we did: camping, playing in the backyard, eating on the ground watching tv, quite literally anything and everything. At some point during my growing up, he would let me run around with his canon rebel photographing whatever I wanted. Whether they were good or not, I couldn’t tell you; but, having those experiences with a camera and enthusiasm for photography gave me the passion for photography I have today. Fast forward a handful of years, my dad bought me my very own Nikon D3000 as a graduation gift from high school. From then on, I was photographing friends, family, hiking trips, and all sorts of other things. Eventually, I sat down with my stepdad while he helped me to cultivate a website of my own to show are the work I was doing and the work I wanted to be aiming for. Now, here I am, running my own business for boudoir and portrait photography in the Houston area. I have a long ways to go in my curating, but I’m excited to see where this adventure takes me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a boudoir and portrait based photographer. While boudoir is one of my favorites to photograph, my Imperfectly Project is something very near and dear to my heart. I have always been a firm believer in loving yourself and your flaws for all that they are and embracing who they make you. So, when I first started this project, I wanted to photograph women (and men) while highlighting what they felt were imperfections on their body. Whether it be a scar or a roll or a birthmark, I wanted to photograph all of them to show the beauty of their skin. While this is not for everyone, my hopes for this project is for people to see similarities among others and know they’re not alone, and that they can love their bodies the way they were intended to.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
My biggest issue was believing I could do every little thing on my own. During the seven years I’ve been a photographer, I’ve learned that working with other photographers and artists is the best way to grow as an artist. If you meet a fellow artist out and about, get to know them, follow their work, share their work and plan to meet up and possibly collaborate on something!
