Meet Yarami Martinez of Ivan’s Bootcamp & Cardio Kickboxing in Northside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yarami Martinez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I lost my father when I was two-1/2 years old, He suffered from schizophrenia and shot himself in front of my eyes. I’ve been thru a really rough childhood after that. I’ve always been the athletic kind and love being outdoor exploring. Middle school tried out for soccer and once finished volleyball and then track. I just always loved feeling strong it kept my mind from wandering other things.

I then reached high school and was still a track athlete until I started hanging around with the wrong crew. I graduated high school and started a little after that got pregnant and lost the baby a little after three months. Got pregnant again three months after and reached 18 weeks until I started having strong pains I figured it was the baby just growing and didn’t think much of it. Finally had a doc app.

That afternoon and was told I was actually having contractions and the baby was coming down. I got send to the hospital to deliver the baby at 18 weeks, that was the hardest thing I had been thru at 18 years old. I suffered from horrible depression, just wanted the dark and to eat and sleep. I gained so much weight from being 150lbs to gaining all the way to 225lbs in just a few months. One day, I got up and said that it no more I’m stronger and this will not destroy me. I will do it for myself and be better. Gave it my all, started eating healthy and going to the gym and lost 50lbs in exactly three months.

Started loving the transformation my body was showing me. Kept it going and three years later got pregnant at age 21. Lots of complications so wasn’t able to work out at all. I had my first daughter at 36wks via C-section because she was breech. Breastfed and was weighing 220 so I started my routine again and lost those 50 lbs like nothing. When my first born turned two I was already expecting my 2nd child and again many complications and bed rest and no exercise but maintained myself by juicing and trying to stay healthy with food. Only gained 34 lbs and had him preterm at 32 weeks.

I breastfed him till ten months old because he needed mommies milk and I completely stopped working out to give him my full attention since he was born early and weighing 5lbs 7oz. I finally started my routine again after him being ten months and hasn’t stopped ever since. I lost all my gained weight and started focusing on powerlifting started getting super lean and fit and loved every minute of it. My husband had been a manager for a fitness gym for many years that finally we both decided to start our own warehouse gym and see where it took us. Word of mouth and promoting for us to become better and bigger.

Little by little our business started growing we needed a bigger location and decided to get a bigger warehouse to fit more clientele. We struggled at the beginning and have had our ups and downs but always have hustled from left to right to make it work. I started loving the training career so much that I went ahead and studied and got took courses and also did the nutrition part of it. We have been maintaining it since then.

A mother of three, a wife, maintaining a business, a personal trainer and also a boot camp instructor, maintaining a household and so forth and yet I’m still surviving. It’s been a tough ride, but I always remind myself I am Wonderwoman and will everyday survive all my battles.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a rough road for me from losing my father at 2-1/2 years old to being in a violent relationship from 17-20 years old loosing two pregnancies and one of them Me being 18 weeks pregnant and having to actually deliver my son as small as my hand was truly hard for me.

Meet Ivan in 2009 the first time I was entering a gym after losing all my excessive weight from my postpartum depression after losing my son at gestational 18 wks. He is now my husband, my sole mate and my business partner everything has been much different after I met him.

He has always pushed me to go for more to achieve every goal I set myself too. He had been managing for esa gyms for a very long time that one day I told him; Let’s start our own. We can charge my credit card to the max and start it. I knew there was plenty of talent from him and myself.

Please tell us about Ivan’s Bootcamp & Cardio Kickboxing.

What sets me apart from others is that if you aren’t a goal getter, I will stick to myself. Always surround yourself with people that have ambition and will always push you for more.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Favorite childhood memory would have to be at age nine. My mom was a single parent to three kiddos me being the middle child and only girl. As she was preparing for our birthday, my younger brother and I were born on the same day but different year.

I saw her get up early, preparing food for the small gathering we were going to have while cooking us breakfast and at the same time talking on the phone managing a trucking business she had all at the same time. She was always moving and never stopped the hustle.

From there on, I always wanted to be like her. She always inspired me to be a strong and powerful person with no help.
