Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Perry.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I fell in love with music at the age of four. I started playing piano at that age, and later learned guitar, trumpet, and french horn. I believe in getting things done yourself. A person can accomplish so much if they put their mind to it. Music became my passion and focus. I created Vanilla Sugar in 2009, and have been developing it as a brand instead of just a band. I design the merchandise, book the tours and run the show.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel that every road has some occasional bumps. However, any bump or obstacle can be overcome. I feel that starting out as a young woman in a predominantly male scene was a little tough. People wouldn’t take me seriously, but I kept on. I know who I am and what I want to accomplish. I won’t let anyone take that away from me or try to stop me from creating. My advice to other young women would be to keep your eyes and mind set on the goal. There will always be a few people who don’t like what you’re doing or do not support you – don’t let these people under your skin. Continue to do what makes you feel happy and productive. This is your time, do not let anyone take that from you.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I run a few different businesses. I am a musician, photographer, videographer, model, and booking manager.
I am most proud of Vanilla Sugar. I am able to perform music, as well as shoot and edit photos and music videos. I book all of my tours. I feel so accomplished in the fact that each one of my creative outlets is met every day.
I also shoot live concert photos around Houston, Tx and Los Angeles, Ca.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The biggest barrier that I’ve come across as a female leader is men not treating me as an equal. Even today, I still have the occasional sound guy who brushes me off as if I don’t know anything. It feels good though, to say, “We run our own sound.” Rebecca (my live sound engineer) and I will set up the show, and have it sound great. Sometimes, the men who didn’t believe will come to apologize. I hope that in a few years there will be a significant change in respect. Women can do every job that men can. We are great leaders and see the big picture with every project we work on.
