Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Witt.
Angel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I guess it really starts with my Dad’s love for photography, the arts. I remember growing up looking at old photos he had taken with his camera or drawings he had sketched, intrigued by what he was able to create by way of camera and pencil. I think somewhere along the way, it resonated within me; I also think that it was there all along.
One way or the other, fast forward many years later through college, corporate jobs, marriage, and a baby; I found myself, as many people do I’m sure, feeling in kind of a rut. Something was missing. And at the time I didn’t know what that was.
Back up a bit to my husband and I’s 3rd wedding anniversary in 2017, where he gifted me with a beautiful Canon camera; total gift set! Camera bag, lens, tripod, the whole enchilada. Well, I would love to say I got the ball rolling the very next day and the rest is history!
Sadly enough, I let that camera sit in the bag for months. There would be days I would fiddle with it of course. I’d watch a few YouTube videos, but I didn’t try and operate the darn thing for a while. I kept convincing myself I wasn’t ready somehow, Even after reading, and researching and taking an OWN Master Class Photography course, I still felt I wasn’t ready.
Thinking back on it, I see clearly now what that was. Fear. I was scared to start shooting. I was scared to be creative. Fear of questioning whether I would even be good at it or did my husband just waste all this money on this camera?
Fast forward to 2018, where I decided I would not let my fears stop me from doing all the things I wanted to do. I told God what I wanted, and then I fully surrendered to His will. Casting all my cares/fears on Him. From that point on, I made a conscious effort to ‘be intentional’ with my thoughts, time, talents, worship, family, etc., I decided to take the time to reacquaint myself with myself. I had become Angel The Career Woman, Angel The Wife, Angel The Mom and a host of other variations of Angel, I kinda lost sight of just who Angel was. And I knew I had to get back to that, and I also knew, I couldn’t try to do that on my own. I knew I had to walk by faith.
I started intentionally bringing my camera places, shooting my surroundings, asking friends if they wanted to shoot, just documenting day to day life with family and friends. I started to really learn the technical terms and started to just enjoy learning all the features and tricks on my camera.
From all of this, Witt Focus Photography was created and I couldn’t be any more grateful for the wonderful opportunities, projects, platforms and support that I have been blessed with since its conception.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say that the road has been rather smooth in starting and setting up the business. I would like to get more traffic flow to my photography pages so I am working on getting better at that every day. The tough parts are remembering that art is subjective and to remain patient yet passionate when pursuing what you love.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Witt Focus Photography is a company ‘focused’ on capturing what the every day eye may miss. The company is defined by being able to capture the most genuine of moments and convey the stories within them. Witt Focus Photography believes every place, thing, person, has a story and often times it not only lies within a picture but is also best told through visual depiction.
What were you like growing up?
I did everything as a kid. I was in all the extracurricular activities. Ranging anywhere from athletic, artistic, educational and spiritual. From stage-plays, choir concerts, dance recitals and piano recitals to basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track. Then throw Sunday School Secretary and Student Council Boards, etc. to the mix. You name it, I was a part of it. My parents were pretty busy with me growing up.
Speaking of them; if my parents were answering this question, they would probably riddle off that I talked a lot, I was intuitive and stubborn as a child. They’d probably say I was bossy and determined too. That I was the overachiever, the goal-setter, the planner. All true accounts of me as a child. And well as an adult too if we are being honest. 🙂
Growing up I liked the arts. I loved to read and write poems. I liked architecture. I liked structures. I liked to draw and sketch at the time. I also loved to be outside riding my bike around the neighborhood and playing basketball. I loved being active. I was a tomboy if you ever did see one. And an awkward one at that.
Funny how life comes full circle because now two of my driving forces are fitness & photography. The things that brought me joy when I was a child are now bringing that same joy to me as an adult. Which further confirms my belief that your gifts are God-breathed into you from the moment you are created and once you seek to use them for the glory and advancement of God’s will, the sky is the limit.
