Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Harris.
Cory, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Before picking up a camera, I can honestly say that I resembled a lost soul with no real purpose. This is because I learned at an early age that life can be one big act of letting go.
In 2009, 8 days before Christmas, someone very close to me died in a car accident. Watching her casket lower into the ground forever changed my life. In a single instant, I lost a person I cared deeply for and a future that seemed so clearly laid out before me. Fast forward to 2015. My father slipped into a coma. He took his last breath as I held his hand. My father was my best friend, my partner in crime, and he taught me countless life lessons. Losing him felt like losing a part of myself.
These intense moments of heartache almost destroyed me, and I wanted to give up more times than I can count. I needed an outlet to keep my sanity, and by the grace of God, I found something to revive my pulse. Creating for me isn’t just a hobby — it keeps me alive. Every place I explore, every person I meet, and every story I tell breathes life back into me. Without creating, I’m not sure I would be here today. Also, I have an amazing wife that supports my journey, and believes in me more than I do. I’ve met some incredible people along the way as well. Shout out to TYC, they are my exploring crew!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My focus is on storytelling through videos. I love how the perfect combination of visuals and music elicits a spectrum of emotions and prompts people to reminisce on memories. I don’t just hear music; I feel it. I film everything from weddings to music festivals, but my true passion is to hit those moody and abandoned vibes.
I love exploring abandoned places for the perfect backdrop for my next video. One of the reasons I’m so drawn to moody is because I see so much beauty in pain. We all go through dark periods in life, but letting our pain break us wide open allows us to tap into our true self. Pain is our catalyst for creativity, passion, and contented peace. So, I want to capture stories of pain, suffering, and hardship to illuminate their ability to spark personal growth.
I struggled for a long time with surviving, but I realized that no matter what, you must keep finding something to fight for. I want to inspire people going through a hard time to keep searching for what gives their life purpose.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
For me, an artist is someone who captures an aspect of reality and transmutes it into a format for others to view. In this regard, I don’t believe the role of an artist changes in different time periods but rather the symbolism that references these ageless expressions of emotions and concepts.
The world has always been a rollercoaster of swings, peaks, and valleys, and creating has always existed as an outlet for artists to share the intimacy of their inner emotions. Local, national, or international events can influence the reality that I interact with, but my primary goal is to break moments down to their individual parts.
Personally, I try not to get caught up in things I can’t change and focus on what I can. There is pain in this world, but there is also so much beauty. When we open our eyes to this beauty, amazing things can happen.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
