Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Nicole Berman of Nicole Berman, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Nicole Berman.

Hi Dr. Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I went to medical school with a passion for wellness and helping people truly thrive. During my medical school training, I gravitated toward the field of pediatrics. While on this rotation, we were given a talk on breastfeeding. I was amazed by the power of breastmilk. I had never thought of breastfeeding before either personally or professionally, but this talk was the beginning of a new passion that intersected perfectly with my interest in wellness. Eventually, becoming a mom and struggling with breastfeeding solidified my desire to help others during this vulnerable, transformative stage of life. After residency, I worked in a pediatric urgent care. During that time I also obtained my IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification and furthered my knowledge in lifestyle medicine, which emphasizes healthy habits to prevent, treat, and sometimes reverse disease. In 2024, I decided to fully pursue my passion and opened my own practice dedicated to lactation medicine and pediatric lifestyle medicine.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my struggles has been balancing my career aspirations with my desire to be fully present for my family. Currently, my main hurdles have been learning the business side of having my own practice and getting my services known to those who can most benefit from them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My practice is dedicated to helping families thrive across different stages of childhood, from providing lactation support as early as the prenatal stage to instilling healthy lifestyle habits as children get older. I dedicate significant time to my patients in order to fully support them and their individual situation. During lactation visits, I evaluate both the lactating parent and baby and provide a plan that aligns with the family’s goals and health. As a physician and lactation consultant, I am in a unique position to fully care for the breastfeeding dyad, whether that is optimizing latch or a more complex issue requiring a medical work up and treatment. And as a mom myself, it is such an honor to help make this new stage of parenthood a positive one for my patients. During lifestyle visits, I work with parents and their child to identify and implement meaningful, sustainable changes to behaviors and habits. Areas such as nutrition, sleep, and movement are addressed with the goal of optimizing overall physical and emotional well-being. These visits empower families with the skills needed to take control of their health. My visits are in-home, and I prioritize evidence-based, compassionate, individualized, and thorough care.

How do you think about luck?
Good luck has certainly allowed me to get where I am today, both professionally and personally. In addition, having a vision I am passionate about, along with hard work, and supportive family and friends, have allowed me to reach this point.
