Today we’d like to introduce you to Olusola Calhoun, DNP, APRN, MBA, MHA.
Hi Olusola, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. My professional background is in nursing. I have been a nurse since 1997. While being a wife and taking care of my young family, I continued my education. I completed my doctoral degree in nursing practice (DNP) in 2012.
As a nurse practitioner receiving a doctorate degree is considered a terminal degree, you can’t get any further. I felt content but I still wanted more for my life. I always had aspirations to be an entrepreneur but because life is not linear it took me until 2024 to do so.
What kicked me into motion? Experiencing the Covid pandemic as a sole nurse practitioner in my department. I spent the majority of my time in the emergency department. Being responsible for others while knowing that you are facing the possibility of illness/death and leaving your family shifts your perspective of life. Due to that experience, I chose to focus more on my quality of life and my professional passion knowing tomorrow is not promised to anyone.
In the Spring of 2024, immediately after graduating with my MBA, I moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Houston, Texas. I promised myself that I would not jump back into a hospital setting because I was not happy there. I owed it to myself to seek happiness and be courageous. I decided to get further education and training and open Soirée Aesthetics Medspa.
I chose aesthetics because I love beauty and have a great appreciation for how health, medicine, wellness and beauty merge. I have personally received aesthetic services and always enjoyed the confidence boost that it provides. Now I am able to give that same confidence boost to other men and women who come in to look and feel their best, younger and refreshed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been the smoothest road but I believe there is beauty in the struggle. Challenges build psychological muscle, it’s like an exercise of your will. I practice optimism as much as I can but most importantly, I have God and my faith.
For context, I am an only child and lost my mother when I was 17. At that time, the only way to success was education so I pushed through. It was difficult, I had to take the longer route because I had a family. When you are in the trenches, you have to keep your blinders on so you stay looking forward. That is the only way that I was able to complete 12 years of college education and only miss one semester. I apply a similar sentiment to being a business owner.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Soirée Aesthetics is a med spa that focuses on aesthetics, wellness, weight loss and anti-aging beauty services.
We offer the latest in anti-aging, wellness and aesthetic services to help you achieve your best self. We specialiize in services such as neurotoxins, dermal fillers, PDO threads, facials, microneedling, chemical peels, dermaplaning, IV hydration, regenerative therapies such as PRP/PRF and concierge services. We create balanced, natural-looking results that respect and enhance ethnic facial features. Being a nurse practitioner, my priority is educating my clients on the importance of self-care. Our goal is to be a comprehensive medspa for wellness and aesthetic services that helps clients attain their non-surgical beauty and wellness goals.
I am very proud of my brand. I chose the name Soirée because it sounds beautiful and means “evening party or evening celebration“ in French. I was inspired by my Parisian summer vacation in 2024. Therefore, my depiction of Soirée is …though we may be aging, “approaching our evening” we can still preserve and celebrate our beauty. Beauty is timeless. Hence, the “evening party”!
At Soirée Aesthetics we “relax wrinkles, defy time, unlock the secrets to ageless beauty!”
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are when my mother was alive. She made me into the great woman that I am today. She was strong, beautiful, fun, intelligent, creative and very loving. She exposed me to as much as she could in the time we had together.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are when my mother and I made clothing and modeled pieces for her friends. We had a dog and rabbit which taught me caring, empathy and responsibility as I was an only child. Another favorite memory I have is attending USC Med Cor. I am from Los Angeles, California and USC MedCor is a program based on USC campus for selected youth with aspirations to be doctors. Only students with GPA 3.5 or higher were selected and I attended every Saturday until I graduated high school.
