Conversations with Amy Reynolds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Reynolds.

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a child growing up in a rural setting in SW Pennsylvania before the onset of technology and social media, I read as a way to pass time and entertain myself. I have always felt the magic of the middle grade fantasy genre and as a child going into those worlds was fantastical. As a writer, the genre of children’s picture books is my favorite. I think they are really important and I enjoy offering stories that contain humor but also themes that maybe aren’t addressed in school.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is no smooth road here in Earth School! Navigating the publishing world is full of frustrations and not for the faint of heart. Everyday is a challenge. Having mentors and support from other writers / artists is a huge help. Rejection becomes almost routine, so commitment to staying hopeful and really believing in yourself and your work is essential.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a picture book author/writer. I am most proud of my recent publication Water Remembers. A lyrical non-fiction, picture book on the recent research on how water is a like a flash drive–it stores memory! What may set me apart from others is a willingness to venture into subjects that may seem avant garde or non-mainstream. I’m fascinated with leaders in their fields such as Nobel Prize Winner Luc Montagnier. How their minds work and how we can bridge the science / spirituality gap.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
From what I’ve seen, the children’s picture book industry follows trends. So whatever is happening in the world they will reflect that so as to best be able to sell books that seem relevant to people. I hope the genre trends towards offering works of gratitude, self-esteem and self-worth. I’d also love to see more children’s picture books reflecting conflict mediation so that bullying can be addressed from a compassionate and powerful place.
