Conversations with Elaijia Eaton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaijia Eaton.

Hi Elaijia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Greetings, I’m Elaijia Eaton, a Texas native, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), mommy, and serial entrepreneur always ready to evolve and aid. I’m on a bold mission to redefine what mental health looks like under a non-conformist lens.

I come from a legacy of healthcare workers, mainly nurses. Compassion was more than a value, being that it was a way of life, to the point that I associated it with being a nurse. The compassion I felt and the skills I have been able to develop from childhood and onwards helped me propel forward. Initially, in taking deliberate steps into nursing and dealing with things in consequential order, I noticed that my most prized impact had been in social services and therapeutic settings.

A full circle moment appeared to me, while receiving commendations for presenting in undergrad. A group of graduate students were in the course and evaluated me with such intrigue and inspiration. I learned of these matters during the interview with the professor of the course, who highlighted that for me. They suggested I explore careers in Family Law, clinical therapy, Child Protective Services, and other helping professions. That moment brought realization that my impact wouldn’t come through traditional healthcare-rather through healing families, empowering individuals, and helping the unheard rediscover their voices.

Throughout a period of reflection, a broader interest was sparked throughout many steps, including this course presentation and other revelations. I faced many challenges up to this point-nursing, Speech Language Pathology, etc, which were my reasons for being at Lamar University. It was a great sacrifice I had to make as a mother traveling an infant to another city to continue my education. I was a high achiever-graduated high school early, earned an early graduate’s scholarships and others, awards, and pell grants, then fast-tracked through college. Yet, despite having the early collegiate experience at Houston Community College and Lamar University, and working hands-on with Alzheimer’s, being on the Dean’s List and Honor’s Lists, nursing wasn’t the right fit for me. What usually came easy to me in my ability to overachieve, it didn’t with nursing. The challenges were weighty.

My mind transformed, recognizing that I was purposed for more. Other healthcare industries didn’t resonate with me the way Family and Consumer Sciences did. I quickly realized I was a life-long learner, and more of a student of life by natural circumstances and purpose. I started to view college and higher education as a journey to many opportunities toward serial entrepreneurship.

Working for Child Protective Services was a pivotal chapter along this journey. I held curiosity about the field after TDFPS visited my college class. As a Family Specialist, I became deeply invested-concerned with the welfare of families and their children once served by CPS. My internal dialogue was constantly, what happened after families completed services. Were they able to achieve rehabilitative goals once discharged from counseling? What happens next in their future with new learned self-efficiency and stability? The curiosity drove my mission:

“To help disadvantaged individuals maintain health, wellness, and stability in their own lives.”

Being aware of the disproportionate representation of marginalized communities in various systems were of the many gaps I wanted to explore by seeking solutions. So, I pivoted, stepping fully into therapeutic work. I’ve held multiple roles in mental health, such as, Licensed Clinical School Associate, Primary Therapist, Clinical Team Lead, Independent Contractor, and now private practice owner (therapist). The work ranged from inpatient/outpatient facilities, to local mental health authorities, and community mental health agencies. Each role brought clarity: I wasn’t just working a career, yet answering a calling.

I am faith-driven, person-centered, innovative, creative, non-conformist, and solution-oriented. My approach blends empathy, authenticity and non-conformity, with strategy and reality. Compassion combined with clinical care and client-collaboration are my forte. I hold two counseling licenses in Texas-Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), along with equivalent licenses in Vermont and New Mexico, and a registry listing in South Carolina.

My life story didn’t allow me to stop there! Therapy paved way to “Coaching,” recognized as Life Enrichment Advisement-evolving into something more holistic under my brand, Redefining. My entrepreneurial journey spans two major businesses and one new endeavor:

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles were endless, just focusing on the area of education alone. Academia and intelligence weren’t quite the problems, yet during what is usually recognized as positive life transitions, one should usually expect peace. My road was long and insufferable. Realizing nursing wasn’t my thing, I immediately redirected and my education wasn’t in vain. However, the obstacles to transport, survive, and my livelihood were attacked in all domains. I’ll focus on the educational journey and roadblocks associated with it.

In what should’ve been a celebratory final lap toward graduation, I found myself on bedrest—three months pregnant, enrolled in a five-week mini-semester for my last stretch, and facing the very real threat of not walking the stage on time. My professor wouldn’t honor the doctor’s request. Self-advocacy kicked in, with my legal research and follow through. I started under Title IX and disability research, and went into full self-advocacy mode—consulting with deans, ADA offices, and university leadership. I wasn’t about to let one reroute my future. Eventually, I overcame said challenge, but while battling this situation, I was stalled in an inoperable vehicle in Houston’s summer heat pregnant (4-hours). I’ve once had to pursue legal regarding the exact vehicle that I was stalled in. I had to overcome eviction threats at this time. My self confidence was still intact, along with my faith in God, because Christ will aways be near to the brokenhearted/struggling.

It was in those moments of being hungry, exhausted, misunderstood, and overlooked, that something clicked:
I wasn’t just a student. I wasn’t just surviving. I was being built and refined.

Those challenges became the cornerstone of the woman I am today: a clinical therapist with two licenses, a mother, a believer, a serial entrepreneur, and a purpose-driven leader behind my brand. The hard times weren’t wasn’t just for me, yet for every person who’s ever sat in the heat, with no energy, and dared to believe that their future could still be a few months away-December 2012. I walked the stage on time and gave birth fifteen days after that being a Caesarean Section mother caring for a small human independently. I suffered in silence and was saved in public, because the Lord didn’t let my crown slip. He showed me the way and directed my path. Not only did I accomplish what I set out to do, BUT GOD maintained my vehicle, provided, and I wasn’t evicted. I worked the mini-semester course remotely. I won that legal case for my car. I birthed a healthy baby. I continued my education and became a clinical therapist.

GOD, WE WON AGAIN!

“There are no shortcuts to success…take the stairs!”
“If I have seen further than others, it’s because I stood on the shoulders of giants.” -Isaac Newton
“Today’s preparations determines tomorrow’s achievements.” -Unknown

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 NIV
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think of myself as the “Good trouble therapist.” I am bold enough to confront and not conform, but to also use Reality Therapy techniques and direct techniques based on the client’s level of comfort. This could often mean, completing an assessment, bringing something to a client’s awareness, and helping them build a plan around it. I am most proud that what I offer looks nothing like Lifetime or what it’s expected to look like. It’s also the thing that sets me apart. I want to also add that being able to meet persons where they are-LITERALLY is also another thing that sets me apart (Redefining Minds Mobile Services PLLC). Hence, a person is stuck in a mind-state, we come into play, and perhaps they need convenience, we help with that too!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Integrity and empathy are priorities, along with not being judgmental, yet still being impactful. When it’s time for good truths, the rapport blended with the empathy and non-judgment can take clients a long way. Having compassion, empathy, and integrity are all impactful to one’s character, making this combination to be of the most importance-things not seen on the outside, yet felt within.

I remember this quote I learned while working at CPS, “One day someone will look at you and say, because of you I did not give up.”
