Daily Inspiration: Meet Cody Khoa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Khoa.

Hi Cody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Interestingly, my photography career was unexpected because I was in college pursuing a diploma in teaching at the time. During my college years, I also operated a home-recording studio. There I earned my income by recording and mixing vocals for Vietnamese singers.

Knowingly how involved I am with music, a friend suggested that it would benefit me much more if I could produce music videos as well. That led to me purchasing my first DSLR camera. I would spend hours and hours watching YouTube videos to learn everything I could about cinematography. After a few fun music video projects, I was asked to film a wedding. I filmed the first couple of wedding highlights for free to build my portfolio.

After a couple of years working and learning in the wedding industry as a videographer, I decided to switch to photography and I’ve been shooting weddings since 2014.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When I first started in wedding photography, I didn’t know any experienced photographers to seek their guidance. The only thing I could do was to watch numerous online courses and learn as I worked at each wedding when I had the chance. At first, it was challenging to get bookings because I was inexperienced and didn’t have a portfolio to present to potential clients.

Thankfully it got better after the first wedding. Previous clients started referring me to their friends and more people know about my photography service.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My team is there to capture every detail and moment of the Bride and Groom’s special day. We are more experienced in Vietnamese traditional weddings as a majority of our clients’ weddings have a Tea Ceremony as part of the wedding day events. It’s a plus to have my wife as the 2nd photographer because she pays more attention to details to make sure the bride is always in her most flattering angle. Our style of photography is soft, bright, and true to color. Although sometimes we try to add a few artistic dark mood images as well.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Our ability to socialize face to face has become more and more of an obstacle as the crisis tries to keep us away from each other. A wedding won’t be the same when family and friends are forced to stream the wedding on social media. Hopefully, we can overcome this crisis soon so people can freely celebrate without any risk.
