Megan Cardet

Hi Megan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A Place for Peanut: Giving Unwanted Horses a Second Chance ❤️ A Place for Peanut (APFP) is a beacon of hope for unwanted horses. Founded in January 2016 by the dedicated and lifelong equestrian Megan Cardet, APFP has a singular mission: to rescue horses from kill pens and give them the love, care, and rehabilitation they deserve.

Saving Lives, One Neigh at a Time:

Since its inception, APFP’s team has saved a remarkable 500 equines. These horses, often facing an uncertain future, are welcomed into a safe haven where they receive the necessary care to heal and thrive.

More Than Just Rescue:

APFP goes beyond simply providing a safe space. Their team works tirelessly to rehabilitate these horses, both physically and emotionally. Once ready, they find loving forever homes where these magnificent creatures can continue their journey of healing and companionship.

Tiny Horses, Big Impact:

APFP recognizes the unique power of miniature horses. These gentle giants play a vital role in their equine therapy program, bringing joy and comfort to children, veterans, and others in hospitals and special programs.

Making a Difference, One Donation at a Time:

As a top-rated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, APFP relies solely on the generosity of donors. All donations are tax-deductible, allowing you to contribute directly to their life-saving work.

How You Can Help:

Donate: Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in the lives of these horses. Visit their website (https://www.aplaceforpeanut.com/) to donate securely.

Volunteer: If you have a passion for horses and helping others, consider volunteering your time and skills.

Spread the Word: Share A Place for Peanut’s story with your friends, family, and network. Help them reach more hearts and raise awareness for their impactful work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a non-profit equine rescue comes with a multitude of challenges, requiring a tremendous amount of dedication and resourcefulness. Here are some of the biggest hurdles we face:

Financial Strain:

Constant Fundraising: Rescues have ongoing expenses for horse care (food, bedding, vet bills), facility maintenance, and staff (even if volunteers). Securing enough donations is a constant battle.

Limited Funding Sources: Grants and major donors might not be plentiful, leaving rescues reliant on individual contributions, which can be unpredictable.

Medical Bills: Unexpected health issues in rescued horses can lead to significant veterinary bills, straining already tight budgets.

Finding Suitable Homes:

Matching the Right Horse with the Right Owner: It’s crucial to find homes that can provide the proper care and environment for each horse’s specific needs. This takes time and careful screening of potential adopters.

Overcoming Public Misconceptions: Some people might view rescued horses as problematic, making it harder to find them good homes.

The Ever-Present Cycle: As horses are adopted out, new rescues come in, creating an ongoing cycle of caring for new animals while finding homes for existing ones.

Staffing and Volunteer Management:

Finding Dedicated Help: We often rely heavily on volunteers for cleaning stalls, feeding horses, and providing basic care. Finding reliable and passionate volunteers can be challenging.

Burnout and Compassion Fatigue: Caring for neglected or abused horses can be emotionally taxing. Staff and volunteers need support to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue.

Facility and Resource Limitations:

Maintaining Facilities: Keeping barns, fences, and pastures in good repair requires ongoing maintenance and resources.

Lack of Specialized Equipment: Rescues might not have access to specialized equipment for handling injured horses or training them for adoption.

The desire to help every horse in need can lead to taking on more animals than the rescue can sustainably care for.

Euthanasia Decisions: In extreme cases, some rescued horses might have severe health problems, forcing the difficult decision of humane euthanasia.

Despite these challenges, we play a vital role in protecting vulnerable horses and offering them a second chance at life.

We rely on the community’s support to overcome these hurdles and continue our essential work.
