Hidden Gems: Meet Omar Amin of FLO dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Amin.

Hi Dr. Amin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born overseas in Amman, Jordan, I came to the U.S. when I was six years old. My family planted roots in Houston, Texas – the place I’ve called his home ever since. By the time I reached high school and became a captain of the football team, I was diagnosed with leukemia. Doctors had questions if I could ever play again but after rigorous chemo, I emerged in even better shape than I was before, and went on to play football and study Biology at the University of Houston. I never gave up and always strived for the best, which has trickled into my approaches in life and dentistry.

After being exposed to the immeasurable power of healthcare, I knew I wanted to make a lasting impact in the lives of others as a doctor. Blending my passion for people, healthcare, and art, I fell in love with dentistry and became a Doctor of Dental Surgery at the UT Health School of Dentistry at Houston.

My past experiences have entirely shaped the way I treat my patients and connect with their struggles. Being on the other end of healthcare, there’s nothing I value more than learning each patient’s story, building real relationships, and taking the time to understand their needs with empathy and compassion. I seek to brighten people’s lives and give them a smile they feel proud of sharing. As a fellow Houstonian, I feel grateful to have my very own practice and be able to give back to the community I know and love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The whole journey consisted of challenges. My health challenges in High school that I previously mentioned. In college, I had a very poor freshman year academically that I never thought I would be able to bounce back from considering what it did to my GPA. I devoted myself for the remainder of my college tenure and was able to graduate at the top of my class and be accepted into my desired dental school. The struggles didn’t end there, as I underwent the grueling 4-year curriculum of dental school that consisted of sleepless nights and endless exams. Opening up the office during the pandemic also came with plenty of hurdles and delays. I’ve come to realize that nothing great in life comes easy, hard work and determination can take you a long way. It’s important to embrace the ups and the downs and grow from them as an individual. I couldn’t have reached where I am today without my support system, mainly my mother and father.

As you know, we’re big fans of FLO dentistry. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Here at FLO dentistry, we aspire to create a modern and comfortable environment where our patients can feel at home. I enjoy nothing more than connecting with my patients and getting them to where they want to be, whether that be a fresh cleaning or a full smile makeover. We recommend treatment to our patients as if they were our own family members and always keep their best interests in mind. We honed in on the technology and made sure to have TV’S on every ceiling, wireless headphones, pillows and blankets, so our patients can have the ultimate dental experience. We understand that coming to the dentist can be challenging for some and our goal is to break down those barriers and make sure that everyone that steps through our doors has an enjoyable and pleasant visit. We offer an array of services from preventative treatment, oral surgery, cosmetic work, implants, Invisalign and more!

We also believe in using our office as a platform to give back to something greater. FLO dentistry is donating proceeds from each new patient exam to Sky High For Kids, an organization focused on combating pediatric cancer.

What are your plans for the future?
We are a brand new office so we really look forward to growing our practice and delivering high-quality dental care to our community. I plan on enhancing my craft and skills as a dentist through continued education courses. One of the recent courses I went to involved providing free dental implants to our veterans through an organization called Smile Faith in Tampa Bay. I would like to create an organization like that of my own and host mission trips to different populations that are in need of dental care. On a personal note, I would like to see more of the world and travel. Maintaining a good work-life balance is key!
