Inspiring Conversations with Donica Strange-Reescano of Patricia Ann Strange Diamond Celebration

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donica Strange-Reescano.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For over 30 years, I have spent my life of leadership helping and serving others. After receiving Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior at age 14, I served in the church’s youth group. My service to others continued in my professional career as peer mentor and supervisor. I formerly served as a leader in a Christian based twelve step program. Most importantly I serve as the founder of the nonprofit organization Patricia Ann Strange Diamond Celebration. The program, named in my deceased mother’s honor, who overcame alcohol and drug addiction, celebrates women in recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. The program provides educational scholarships to women in recovery and fundraising for local women’s rehabilitative programs. After experiencing a marital crisis and
emotional hurt, I searched for help for the hurt in my heart. I found my answer through Jesus Christ. “How can people live with this hurt and pain?” I often asked myself. When I received emotional healing from my hurt, I chose to serve once again by sharing my story. I tell my story in my author debut 23:59 Obsessions and Emotions of Adultery. My other books include Serena’s Got Bounce: The Emotional Resilience of a Tennis Superstar, Businesswoman’s Bible Study: A Collection of Biblical Studies to Inspire Motivate and Encourage Christian Professional Women. My latest release is my first children’s book. The Book of Courage which tells the story of nine-year-old Courage who has a mom who drinks too much. Courage shares her feelings and the lessons she learns about her mom’s recovery journey. I am a graduate of the University of Phoenix. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Business and master’s degree in business administration. I am married to Derrick Alonzo Reescano. We have four children together: Essence, Monica, Judah and Levi. My grandchildren Camden Kairo and Aiden call me “Coco.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life has not been a smooth road for me. I grew up in the inner city. My dad died when I was nine years old and my mom had her own struggles – one of drinking and taking substances. I think, though, how I handle things is based on my outlook and knowing that the current situation is temporary. I have a strong support system. My support system is both friends and family. When things do not seem to go the way I plan, I always believe it will all work out in the end. I know this to be true because I have lived it for myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Patricia Ann Strange Diamond Celebration is the academy awards of recovery celebrations! We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization. We literally celebrate women in long-term recovery and programs that support them. Our mission is to support women in recovery with their educational and developmental goals. Our vision is to help women in recovery live recovered, stable lives in their present and their future.

I do this to honor my mom but also other moms like her that have overcome something very difficult and gotten over it and achieved great success.

In December 2005, my mom, Patricia Ann Strange was planning her ten-year sobriety celebration. She stated she would have a party and buy herself a diamond. Unfortunately, mom passed away prematurely and did not get her celebration or her diamond. I decided to celebrate recovery in her honor.

Because of her resolve, resilience and determination, my mom’s own vision of celebration lives on! PASDC was born in June 2014.

What sets us apart and what we are known for is we focus on the education aspect of the recovery journey through helping women to get their Texas Certificate of High School equivalency. The help is by referral or providing funds for testing. We also have empowerment services where we go into women’s programs and provide education and enrichment.

We fundraise for women’s treatment programs and provide funds to the facility.

As a brand, I am proud that we call the women we serve diamonds. We are making diamonds. Recovery gave my mom her life back! I am proud to see other women do the same.
