Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Jamie Hardy and Dr. Phylicia Combest of Aliana Pediatric Dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jamie Hardy and Dr. Phylicia Combest. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Dr. Hardy and Dr. Combest met on the interview trail for pediatric residency in 2013. Over the years, they remained in contact until 2017, when they both were living in Houston, TX. While preparing for their board certification exams, they would frequently talk about their future goals and career aspirations. Both doctors wanted to create a pediatric dental practice that was modern, relaxing and, most importantly, fun for kids and teens of all ages. As clinicians, it was always very important to Dr. Combest and Dr. Hardy to educate their community on pediatric oral health and practice preventative care when possible. This mutual level of respect for their community and friendship has helped Dr.s Combest and Hardy become a great team.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been a lot of challenges along the way in opening our practice. Between four years of dental school and two years of residency, we both had very limited training on starting a business, let alone a private practice. We attended different courses and talked with mentors and colleagues, but nothing prepares you 100% for the real thing. Especially since we still had a different vision and brand, we wanted to establish.

In addition to making new business decisions, we had a lot of setbacks with COVID shutdowns early in the process. The uncertainty of the nation and dentistry put a lot of stress and pressure on us to adjust. It became a blessing in disguise because we were able to reconfigure some of our construction needs and make better long-term decisions for the practice. Then, right before opening our office, Dr. Hardy had to have urgent surgery and recover for two months at home. This made us really rely on our family and friends to help support us mentally while Dr. Combest kept up with many of the practice needs. One of the blessings of a business partnership is having someone to help keep things running.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Aliana Pediatric Dentistry?
Aliana Pediatric Dentistry is a new and modern pediatric dental office located in the fast-growing Waterview Town Center shopping area in Richmond, TX. We specialize in all of the oral health needs for children, teens and special needs young adults. Our goal is to establish lifelong relationships with each family that we service and help to further educate our community on the importance of pediatric oral health. Using modern, evidence-based techniques in and fun, safe and relaxing environment, our team will cater to the needs of each individual patient. The core values of our practice are based on our 3P beliefs: Patient and Parent Education, Preventative Dentistry and Positive experiences! We pride ourselves in delivering the best “Aliana Experience” from the moment each family enters the door.

The importance of community is an integral part of who we are as a practice. This was reflected in the development of our logo. We chose to start with a solid black background to represent that as human beings, we all start from a common neutral background. Once we add all the different colored paint splashes (representative of everyone’s individuality), we see that on the solid background, the vibrancy of each color is heightened. Showing that when we all come together, your uniqueness can shine through while still working together to paint one beautiful picture. Hence our slogan, “Together we can paint a beautiful smile.”

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
We both believe that our faith in God has been essential to our success, as well as being optimistic in the face of adversity. Our family and friends have also played a major role in helping us continue to succeed.
