Inspiring Conversations with Lisa Agens of Your Lean Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Agens.

Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion to educate. It started when I was a dancer. I quickly became a teachers assistant and then a teacher. I understood the connection between being able to do something and being able to educate about it. My first college degree was in dance and I got my first taste of science. I was never the leanest dancer, but I was happy with my body. When I stopped dancing, I didn’t stop eating like I was dancing, and I quickly gained weight.

I tried various diets, to some degree of success, but I never really learned how to eat to sustain a healthy weight. I certainly didn’t understand any progress beyond the scale weight, either. I counted points, drank shakes, ate bars, all the while not knowing about nutrition. The weight went… and came back… and went… and I was on a constant yo-yo of dieting because nothing was sustainable. I hadn’t actually received any education or knowledge about how to eat.

When I went back to college for Dental Hygiene, I learned a lot more about science and our bodies and started to understand nutrition much more. That didn’t mean I applied it and my weight continued to fluctuate, topping out at 275# at 5’8″.

The icing on the cake was after I had a hysterectomy and the hormones changed! NOTHING was working! I “ate healthy” and “exercised” and nothing would change… until I found out about Keto/Low Carb/Paleo and counting MACROS while eating in a deficit. The weight started to come off and kept coming off. Finally I found what I needed, to feed my body the foods it needs to function while not feeding it too much and not feeling deprived. What is the best diet to lose weight? The one you can sustain!

The dentist I worked with for almost a decade retired, and I thought it was my chance to make my own way by educating people who are looking to lose fat without fads or supplements and started my own business of Nutritional Coaching. Your Lean Life, LLC. I have continued my education in Nutrition and am Certified by ISSA as a specialist in Fitness Nutrition and am a Precision Nutrition Nutritional Coach. I am a Menno Henselmans Certified Personal Trainer and a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and continue to expand my Nutrition and Personal Training knowledge through certifications and continuing education because I do not believe you should stop learning, especially when it comes to ever-evolving science.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road! There is a lot of competition in the “weight loss” industry, and unfortunately a lot of it is not based in science. Much of it is based in products and “it worked for me”, or a bigger corporation who doesn’t actually CARE about your results, just their bottom line. I am not an “Influencer” and am genuine to a fault, so things won’t always be “pretty” but they will be REAL! I don’t have a big budget for marketing and advertising, so it started small and I put in the legwork of posting on Social Media, Networking and encouraging Referrals. Many of my clients are referrals, so I whole heartedly believe in the Ripple Effect. Do good for your clients and they will do good for you!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Your Lean Life, LLC was founded in 2018 and focuses on whole food for nutritional fat loss. I make the program for fat loss and provide the tools to be accountable, but also provide the human accountability and support, as well as further education. I am a firm believer that routines and habits are the struggle people have with fat loss. The science is there, that’s is the “easy” part for me to present a plan for someone to follow. The plans and programs will make fat loss happen in a consistent and healthy way if you form the structure of routines and habits that will not only keep the progress going, but sustain it for the long term.

Fat loss is not about being restricted, but being educated on the “why” behind nutrition. How it works. This leads you to know HOW to make the right choices for nutrition and to improve your relationship with food to not be MORE than it is intended to be… nutrition… not comfort, emotional support or celebration. There is a time and a place for certain foods, but your body will respond, good or bad, to what you feed it. You have to be OK with those consequences and eat with intention, not impulse. So what sets me apart may be the focus on learning, not just doing.

I am proud of the brand I have developed as it has been just me. The name, logo idea, website, marketing, I don’t have an army to help me. I have built it from scratch and it is still building! I am expanding and soon it won’t be “just me”!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Trust your instincts and you don’t know it all. Even Coaches need Coaches. Having someone to bounce ideas off and provide their knowledgeable feedback in business is priceless.
