Today we’d like to introduce you to Shemelle Haggerty.
Hi Shemelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
: I started off as a single mom, always scrambling at the end of the year to get my taxes done. I often had to go the rapid route, which meant paying steep fees—sometimes $1,200 to $1,600—to a Black-owned tax service I was supporting at the time. Eventually, I got frustrated with how much money I was losing.
While studying law with a minor in finance, I began learning how to properly file taxes. With the help of my friend Tisa, I gained the confidence and knowledge to do it myself. At first, I only helped immediate family members—I had no intention of offering tax services to anyone else.
But then my middle daughter, Keirra, started telling her friends about me. Her friends began reaching out, and soon they started referring others. What began as something small and personal grew organically through word of mouth. Today, I’m blessed to have over 300 clients.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At first, I thought everything would go smoothly—but like most journeys, it came with its challenges. I initially set my fee at $150 to build up my clientele. After several years and gaining more experience, I gradually increased it to $200. I was also flexible, often allowing clients to pay me once they received their refund.
Unfortunately, some people took advantage of that trust and never paid. After 22 years of hard work and dedication—helping clients maximize their refunds—I decided to start this year with a new structure: $350 for federal returns and $100 for each state return.
Even now, I face obstacles. Some clients still try to avoid paying or blame me for delays caused by the IRS. It’s frustrating at times, but I’ve learned to stand firm in my value and continue serving those who truly respect and appreciate my work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Haggerty Taxes?
I formed Haggerty Taxes to support middle- and low-income clients by providing affordable, honest, and knowledgeable tax services. I take the time to educate my clients on available credits, deductions, and other financial options. I also make sure they’re having the correct amount of taxes withheld from their paychecks to avoid surprises at the end of the year.
My proudest moments come when my clients are truly satisfied with my work and realize they’re more than just clients—they’re like family. I’ve looked at tax services all over the country, and I’m still one of the most affordable. That’s because I genuinely care. It brings me joy to know I’m making a difference in people’s lives.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I was referred to a seasoned tax professional with over 30 years of experience. Every November, she hosts renewal classes focused on updates to tax laws, credits, and deductions. In addition to learning from her, I stay proactive by doing my own research and subscribing to daily IRS updates to ensure I’m always informed and compliant.
