Life & Work with Risen Grxve of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Risen Grxve.

Hi Risen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always done music since a very young age and it quickly became something I fell in love with. I started and was apart of a couple of bands growing up, but it never worked out. So I officially started my musical journey as Risen Grxve in 2020. During the pandemic, I really changed my outlook in everything in my life and I felt like I needed to become a new me. I truthfully feel like I outgrew the old me and I “rose from the grave”. In 2021 I made my first ep, “Deathwish Diaries”, soon after, I started to perform at shows around my hometown, Houston and even at SXSW in Austin! Currently I am working on my debut album “The Unkindness Conspiracy”.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My first obstacle as Risen Grxve was learning how to adjust to working by myself, without any members to really bounce ideas off of. There was a lot of times where I would find myself stuck in a creative roadblock and dealing with some imposters syndrome. Over the last few years I’ve learned to gain confidence in myself, my abilities and learning how to use the equipment I had access to. The first few songs and The Deathwish Diaries Ep were recorded off of a 2 in 1 headphone and mini microphone from the dollar store.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What sets me apart is my blending of genres. I love music and I want to showcase that through my songs and projects. I really love the 2000’s myspace metalcore sound, I’m a huge fan of the SoundCloud wave from a couple years back and dark trap/ trap- metal. So as Risen Grxve, I decided to fuse all of them together and just have fun with it. It all comes from the heart and its truly something I genuinely enjoy creating. I love being able to express myself and to be entertaining especially during my live performances. I give it my all every time I hit the stage regardless of who or how many people may be there, I’m just there for a good time.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Houston is such a big city to start a music career as an independent artist especially without a band right behind you. But there is always opportunities especially with the amount of entrepreneurs that do support one another. Whether it being a hole- in- the -wall bar or a multi-leveled venue, the amount of support Houston has is amazing to see and I will say I do take advantage of without realizing it. With that being said, working and living in a big city with several opportunities, it can be very easy to get lost in the traction of other artists/ groups, all I can do is offer the same support that my Houston people have offered me. I love the culture of Houston and the most support and opportunities I do receive are from the Latin and Black communities and I am forever grateful for that.
