Life & Work with Samantha Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Garcia.

Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my massage career 12 years ago when I enrolled in school. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do I just didn’t want to go to college long-term. I use to give a friend back massages in high school and they always complimented me, so I decided to give massage school a try. I had no idea that it would transpire into the career I have had.

I’ve worked in many places from big franchises, spas, gyms, and clinical settings. After working in a clinic that focused on personal injuries, I developed my passion and my niche in medical massage focusing on pain management for chronic and acute musculoskeletal ailments.

I worked for many people doing massage the first 11 years, and I was beginning to get burnt out. Recently in 2021, I decided to branch out on my own after coming to the realization that if I could spend all my time, stress, and sacrifices for someone else then I could do it for myself.

I now rent a room within an office suite where I can give my clients the type of massages that I enjoy giving. I take great pride in knowing that my massages are beneficial and effective for my clients whether they are looking for a relaxation massage or therapeutic care. I ensure that my clients are receiving the high-quality massage that they are paying for.

I’ve recently had the opportunity to do massages backstage at the House of Blues for a band called The Pretty Reckless. It was a very exciting experience and it showed me how much I have grown and how much more I can achieve.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to self-employment has definitely not been easy. I didn’t always have the desire to work for myself. The biggest struggle I went through was being a very hardworking employee and not having the work I did appreciate and knowing that I was viewed as replaceable. After I tried to make it to the top with a company doing everything I possibly could to be the best employee, it didn’t work out in the end. I had no choice but to cut my losses and move on so I quit my job mid-shift. I could no longer handle being mistreated and taken advantage of. I went through a period of depression feeling like a failure and feeling unappreciated and wondering about my future income. I then turned those ill feelings into determination that I won’t let that happen to me again and I will bring myself to the top but this time with my own company.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and I specialize in medical massage. I incorporate all of my knowledge, expertise, and modalities into my massages for a more effective massage.

I am most known for getting muscle knots out by using my Gua Sha tools, Fire Cupping, Stretching, Trigger Point, and Active Release Techniques.

I am the proudest when I am doing a massage and I can literally feel the “knot” breaking down and my client telling me how much relief they feel after the massage.

What sets me apart is my integrity and knowing that my clients trust that I am going to do everything I possibly could within my scope of practice to give them the results they are looking for out of their massage.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is very important in the service industry. I will research people and places to see if somehow both myself and the person or place I am networking with will be beneficial. I focus on networking within the health and wellness industry so that means reaching out to fitness business owners, beauty business owners and musculoskeletal rehabilitation clinics.

What has worked for me is just getting out of my comfort zone and connecting with people.
