Meet Baffour Boakye of Baffmasta in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Baffour Boakye.

Baffour, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for entertaining and putting smiles on people’s faces. From a young age in high school, I was a mixture of a straight A student, athlete and class clown. I had African parents though, so I wasn’t like a disrespectful clown, but I managed to grab people’s attention with just how goofy I was. I actually made my first comedy sketch at a talent show my senior year and won 2nd place.

Ironically, I really didn’t take comedy and entertainment seriously until I got my master’s degree in Petroleum Geology. I was just about ready to begin my new career in the oil industry and then boom… oil prices crashed and I was left with student loan debt and no job in sight.

So in June of 2016 I made the conscious effort to pursue my passion of making people laugh while still searching for a full time job. Even when I obtained temporary positions in corporate America, I still continued to do comedy and entertainment on the side. My 2nd or 3rd video that I ever posted to my “baffmasta” page went viral (It was a Dallas Cowboys concept), and from there, I gained confidence in knowing I had a gift to make people laugh.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been all smooth. Definitely not. I was supporting myself while making comedy videos. In the beginning I was spending a few hundred dollars on average per video shoot for videographers and equipment and costume design etc., while at the same time and teaching myself how to edit, on top of having a temporary “get by” jobs.

I actually borrowed $250 from my friend Afolabi in order to get the Cowboys Jersey, and pay for some expenses that went into making that viral video. I also had to borrow a friend’s MacBook in order to actually edit most of my videos, because my pc from Walmart was so trash LOL

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in comedy and entertainment. I am proud that I have been able to reach millions of people and make them laugh or just brighten up their day.

My overall goal is to help lift people’s spirits with my content, and to even go deeper, I’d like to help point people to Christ, because in my most recent days thats what has really driven me to continue pushing positivity and laughter.

I was featured in a music video for the Black Eyed Peas with my friend @callmechoko. We were also featured in the MTV VMAs as well.

I think for me the quality and the effort that I put into my skits/dance videos have always made me stand out when it comes to the content creation side of the business. My eyes and smile as well in general, seem to be entertaining to anyone who sees me in person or through my videos.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a great diverse city and I feel that I can accomplish my goals pretty efficiently here when it comes to spreading joy and laughter.

I dislike the humidity lol.
