Hi Hellsea, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
My name is Hellsea, and I am a tattoo artist, illustrator, singer, dancer, actor and designer. I tattoo out of a private studio in Houston Texas.
What’s your favorite style or concept to tattoo so far?
I would have to say so far, I have found a love for abstract and chaotic calligraphy and black watercolor and themes relating to dark Japanese mythology. Though, when it comes to doing my own personal style with structure, it take form as dark illustration heavy influences of Japanese and otherworldly history, Like sea maidens, or vampires, elves, kitsune, jororgumo etc. Another theme that’s heavy in my tattoo illustrations are of surrealism and sweet or forlorn romance. Roses, briar thorns, bats, cathedral tracery, Stained Glass. Flowing marble, and marble statues.
What makes you happy?
The sea. There are many things that make me happy. Long hugs, big dogs, small cats, shopping, loud repetitive music…moss. But open water I think brings me the most ease, the most strength. Being enveloped in water washing away my doubts, my fears, my anxiety, my depression. Most any water source really. Dealing with the occasional maelstrom of mental plight like bipolar , it is priority that I make time to ground myself with these little things.
What plans have you in store for the future?
I catch myself often this time thinking about travel and even living out of state. There’s a lot that I want to see, many that I wish to meet and work with. My trade is one that enables me to work afar too. This isn’t the most ideal time of course to act on such things but it’s all I can think about and time is all I have to prepare for it. I hope to be more expansive in my tattoo art and do more cohesive large scale, and bold designs for clients. I’m also getting my feet wet with singing and music production. It was a hobby when I was much younger but I fell out of it due to some troubling and questionable collaborations.
As far as music goes, how are your Pursuits?
Currently, I’ve just been preparing poetry and songs that I’ve written over the years into audio files. I have no intention currently into producing anything. At least on my own. What I make is of use to other musicians that I may resonate with on the same artistic spectrum. A lot of what I write is of love and love unrequited, many of its forms as it comes. Sometimes it alludes to dreams I have. Some are vague & metaphysical. Overall it’s some thing that I am steadily becoming familiar with over again.
What would you like to see more of happen in Houston post pandemic?
I know a lot of Houston is dying, becoming gentrified, and washed out. Our lives and nightlife is fatally lacking. especially venues, events, stores, cafes, clubs, and attractions catering to alternative culture. I’d love to see a new renaissance for the city rich with art and community strengthening interactions especially after all the mental and social decline.
Something else I would absolutely love to see in my city is more proactivity to reduce plastic use and introduce biodegradable and reusable options. I also plan to include biodegradeable tattoo supplies into my arsenal. When the pandemic is over, festivals and events will be bustling. it produces tons of waste that gets lost into our city and oceans, we need to be better when this pandemic is over. Not just in respecting each other, but the environment as well.
