Meet DJ Oreo

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Oreo.

Let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in the hoods of Enugu State in Nigeria has its influence as a growing child. One thing is certain, you will always have that hunger for success that is having to be counted among the successful. Directly, looking like a competition thing but indirectly, it’s not. It’s just a mindset of being rated as one of the best or the best. It was something we inherited from our parents. I am from the Eastern part of Nigerian, majorly known as the Igbos. Typical Igbo parents have this competitive thing going on among them of who and what their kids are going to be in the future. It’s more or less a pride thing having your kids do excellently well in school and end up going to school for professional programs like: Medicine, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing. These programs are considered as the real deal.

I’m known as DJ Oreo (Da Kookie Masta). Entertainment has been something I dream of each passing day of my life as a growing child. However, as a Nigerian born to parents of Igbo descent, growing up in the part of the country I grew up in, it is almost unheard of to pursue a career in entertainment. My father expected me to follow in his footsteps and become an engineer while my mother, a nurse wanted me to become a doctor. I grew up taking this responsibility of being either pursuing a career in engineering or medicine, but I never gave up my interest in entertainment. I always do my little performance in front of family and friends, dancing and singing, which my dad will always be like; “Hope am not paying school fees for you to go to school and become a dancer or a singer”. At one point I was restricted from doing my little entertaining activities. My mum is this passionate Christian Mother, so she is always on it about going to church and being useful in church. So, therefore, I used that as an advantage top do music in church and also continued my little dancing thing in a church which I formed a dancing group back in the days.

I got into college as a young boy to study Mathematics (BSc.), but my love for the arts never went away. I was however focused on doing great in school to make my parents proud and it seemed like I was on a long detour from my dreams. Despite how much I tried to stay focus on studies, my dreams always have ways of catching up with me. I will still see myself attending college parties, shows, and events, and I will always have these satisfactions being in such gathering. Not too long, I found myself back on it. First, I got into school modeling, then found myself in this school dancing group, dancing in shows including church events too. It did not stop at that, find myself leaving school to attending events in other states, then I started organizing my own college parties and events. I fell in love more with the whole art thing, so I had this event I did organize, and it was really difficult to lay my hands on a DJ for my event, this got me all mad, I had to discover whatever software they were using then and practiced the craft on my own. I didn’t take it as a huge thing, I will just DJ for my events and private parties for friends. Meanwhile, my dad did not know what I was into but due to the closeness between me and my mum, she just had a little idea of what I do, well she only knows the little I tell her. She didn’t like the idea, but she is one person that will always support positive vibes.

I was done with undergraduate school, so I had to leave Nigeria to Cyprus for Graduate School. I went to get a master’s in petroleum engineering – ironically my parents’ dream for me. In Cyprus, my roommate discovered that I was a DJ, he went through my laptop and found out the mixtapes I created, and he like them. He took the mixtapes to Club promoters in the city of Nicosia and finally the mixtape got me my first gig as an international DJ to DJ in one of the best clubs in the city. I was terrified because I had never done that before, having to DJ in a crowd of over 250 people from a different race of life. The gig went great, saw the love and the acceptance from the crowd, at this point I knew I can no longer run away from this dream. This gave birth to the brand name ‘DJ OREO’. I kept on with the grind, playing in different clubs in the country and also in various college parties, then still organized my own events too. I rose to the top of the list of international DJs in a short while.

After graduation, I moved to Houston to work as a Petroleum Engineer, but I still found myself back on the nightlife scene again. It was a whole new vibe in Houston. Houston has one of the largest number of Africans in America, and not only that, the largest number of international DJs too. One about me, once I set my mind to achieve something, I work with so much passion, determination, and grace, with that mindset of being the best or one of the best. I was opportune to meet one of the best international DJs in the city, who gave me his platform several times to showcase myself. It was not so easy at first, because everything looked different from the culture, style, and type of music. One thing I had was determination and humility. Each time is given an opportunity, I deliver like it’s my last. I also applied the feedback policy, that is after each set, I try to find out what my fellow experienced DJs think and also what the crowd thinks and use that to work on my craft. I kept up with the grind and here I am today as one of the best international DJs in the city.

For me, the craft is way more than what people think it is to me. I see each of my gigs as a competition, that is to say, each future gig must be better than the former. That is why it can only get better to best with DJ OREO. From one level of progress to another.

DJ OREO is way more than just a name:
It’s a personality.
It’s an Identity.
It’s a dream come alive.
It’s a person.
It’s a lifestyle.
It’s a movement.
It’s a BRAND!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will say good success is a process and it does not come so easy no matter what. I will say it’s not been easy especially with family pressure and cultural pressure to pursue traditional career paths. I have found myself trying to stray away from my passion but life keeps bringing me back one way or the other. Family and friends trying to judge your personality because of what you do. I have finally embraced that entertainment will always be a part of my life and have tried to find creative ways to express that.

Getting to this level in a short while did not come overnight, it took more than just calling the craft a hobby or a side hustle. It took humility, steadily grinding, bent knees praying to God, determination, passion, love for the craft, and people. Journey so far not been that smooth but trust me it’s been worth the while and I will the journey just started because we ain’t. It takes steps to get to the top and it takes more steps to remain at the top. I am here to stay and that why I keep my mind prepared for the challenges ahead.
