Meet Elia Aguilar of Elia’s Stylez in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elia Aguilar.

Elia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for hair started at a young age with my barbies of course. I always wanted to change their look whether it was chopping off hair, altering their makeup or their wardrobe. Then as I got older and entered my middle school years, I developed a liking to chemistry because I enjoyed the formulas, this oddly enough influenced my decision of becoming a hairstylist. In my line of work you often have to mix formulas to create the colors you want. At times my creativity and curiosity may have gotten out of hand, but I found the hair industry embraces that. So many possibilities to be created. Also, I always felt the need and want to help one another out in any way possible such as; be a lending ear, shoulder, or heart and let them know I am always here no matter what for their comfort. Becoming a therapist sparked my interest as well. Thankfully I stepped foot into this amazing hair industry that allows me to be both! I’ve been in the hair industry for ten years now and on my own for a 1 1/2 year. After working underneath employers I finally got the courage, determination, and guts to be my own boss. Why wouldn’t I be my own boss?

Has it been a smooth road?
Every road has its bumps and curves. The beginning of my road to success was scary. I fought off fear through educating myself in just about every aspect and situation I may come across. Days leading up to my opening day, I was sleepless. Fearful, I would fumble my words, receipts wouldn’t print or that my credit processing would malfunction somehow. These were all just my common nerve jitters. My first day in fact went very well, I finished that day and patted my back. At first, I felt as though I was alone in this very new entrepreneurial life. I attended the Houston Boss Babes launch party and felt the unity of strong like-minded entrepreneurial women. There’s a lot of love and support out there right at your fingertips. Becoming my own boss hasn’t been easy but it’s worth every sweat and tear. Special thanks to Rebekah Marie for the social gatherings!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Balayage and Hairpainting! Creating customized hairstyles for every client. I do what I love out of passion, it’s not just all about hair. It’s about building relationships and the trust my clients give me. We get to share so much together through our life journeys and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Two of my favorite endings to every service is my clients constantly checking out their hair in the mirror and the hug I receive at the end. Special thanks to my clients for the endless love and support through all these years with so many more to come! Only positive vibes in my atmosphere!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is one of the biggest cities and sky is the limit here. Don’t forget to just be you here. Your uniqueness is what sets you apart. With that being said, there are hair artist every way you look. Keep your passion high, don’t get discouraged. If you make a mistake it’s ok get back up and learn from it. Keep honing your skills and talent as much as possible. Find a good establishment that you feel and know is right for you. One that can help build your foundation skills and keep them flourishing.
